Whatcha watching?

Just watched Adolescence on Netflix. So well done. All the acting is top level but the performance by the kid in the main role is absolutely incredible. Sort of like watching some of the wunderkind videos of 12 year old bass players with incredible chops but he has such depth, range and 'maturity' to the performance.

Rewatching this and blown away on the technical level as each episode was shot as one continuous long take. "While shooting the British show, which traces the emotional fallout after a teenage stabbing, the camera was handed between operators like a relay race, clipped on and off drones and passed between the fast-moving crew as they followed the actors in and out of buildings and vehicles."

Can't overstate how difficult this is - it only takes something as minor as one extra looking directly at the camera to blow a take.

I went to see Novocain and sat down in the wrong theater and saw this instead. It's apparently a horror movie, and it had the right tone and everyone in it was great, but they went with PG13 violence and very little of it. It didn't go all in and ended up being mediocre because of it. I don't know anything about this movie but someone had a vision but held back a lot. It's A24. It could've been weird and creepy like it clearly was meant to be, but it was barely anything. It could've been really good.

We watched "A Real Pain" over the weekend. It was good. I appreciated some of the shot choices Eisenberg made, and Kieren Culkin definitely deserved his Oscar.

I liked it a lot. Have stayed in the same hotels in both Warsaw and Lublin (and in the same elevator shown in the movie at the one in Warsaw had Willam Dafoe get on). Eisenberg has now become a dual US/Polish citizen (as am I).

I've been busy and just now finally managed to see the last episode of Severance at work. I had to step away because I almost cried like a baby. A fat, hungry baby.

It's quiet, and subtle and minimal but this is some of the best Christopher Walken you've ever seen. Everyone is so good. The show is so good. Everyone should watch Severance, and then immediately cancel apple tv plus when they're done.

Transformers: Rise of the Fallen.
I dig these movies. I watch them when they show up and I'm not busy. As it usually goes with these movies, shortly after watching one I'll be out and about and come across someone with an Autobot or Decepticon logo on their ride, and it freaks me out. :D

There are a few other things on Apple+ that I like.... but not many.

The missus and I just watched the first two episodes of Season 1 tonight. Fascinating...

I am honestly surprised that a show that is SO EFFING WEIRD is as popular as it apparently is! But I like weird, and the missus was more engaged than usual when it comes to weird, so we'll probably stick it out and watch the whole series. Two seasons, right?
