I bought an SFT when they were first available on the strength of the DOOM clip and was looking for heavy distortion out of it, and, not finding that, returned it. Now, after deciding that I'd like to be able to have some tube-like sag and harmonics for fingerstyle playing sometimes, and remembering that the SFT is great for that, I decided to pick up another one.

As for the Super Fatman, it just isn't what I'm after sound-wise, which sucks, because the features are awesome. The nature of the sweep is a terrible match for my bass, which has a crazy kick in the low mids, plus I prefer a wider sweep than what the selectable ranges have built in. I'm quickly running out of filters to try--if someone will make me a filter that has the features and sound of the SWAW with the added ability of selectable up/down sweep and an attack knob, I have money I want to give you!

No, that is in there, but that's about as extreme as it gets--I was looking for the gain to up another 25% from that point (at least). A bit of full-circle silliness here: I was looking for something to replace my AGRO rack unit, which I loved the sound of (and ran nearly at full saturation) but hated the size of.

Exactly why the SFT is at the top of my hotlist at the moment! Thanks for the info. :)

SWAW = Snow White Auto Wah? I don't remember seeing an up/down switch on it, but the Mad Professor Facebook page had a post about a new Bass version of the Snow White. Don't know how either one sounds though, plus... no up/down.

I'm a filter junkie, own or have owned 10 filters so far and played 3-4 more. Have you tried a Barge Concepts Grinder? Sort of similar controls to the Super Fatman, maybe just different enough for what you're after. I haven't run into ANY filter sound it can't do and have gotten a variety of voicings out of it. I've even pulled off a very convincing recreation of the Herbie Hancock's synth keyboard intro on Chameleon. It's a little big, but it absolutely makes up for it with what it can do. I'm also pretty confident it could handle that low-mid thing with your bass.

The bass SWAW is just a re-tuned SWAW, no extra controls. The SWAW is hands-down the best sounding filter I've ever heard, but it's just missing features as far as I'm concerned. I've never used a Grinder, but I have had a GR before and didn't care for the character of the envelope. I have my fingers crossed on the Aguilar Filter Twin.

I too bought it on the strength of the doom clip and almost returned it when I couldn't get it. It doesn't have much low end at full gain since the low frequencies just clip so much that they turn into higher ones! I reckon that video may have been made running it at 18v though, which I am hoping to try out at some point. Ultimately I kept it because it sounds great for bluesy overdrive.
