I don't keep much in my actual bass case. The tools that came with the bass, and a cleaning cloth that's about it. I keep my strap on the bass itself all the time, so I guess you could include that. I have another bag full of other smaller bags that have instrument cables, extension cords, powerstrips, batteries, screwdrivers, nail clippers, headphone amp, headphones, old ipod so if I'm waiting around and bored I can warm up, or play some tunes or listen to the radio.

In BG gig bag: 20' cable, strap (on bass), tuner, picks, foam earplugs in case I forget the custom made set. Also, a book or magazine to read on the subway. DB gig bag: bow, music reading glasses, tuner, rosin, book/magazine.

Like some others here, I also pack (but usually leave in the trunk of my car) a full bore field tech kit with a more complete set of tools, spares for everything, first aid kit, etc.

Probably the same for most people who have played out for more than a year. Same stuff happens to all of us eventually. You learn to be prepared.

I should probably add a bottle of water to it as well because when I go up from my school to guitar lessons every Wednesday I'm always out of breath as I only have about 5 minutes to lug my bass (which weighs 10-12lbs), my schoolbag and my amp up there. Probably should mention that I have a limp in my right foot, too.

Other than a Mogami cable and a PolyTune clip-on, the only thing a good bassist needs...

Those are some giant Lifesavers! Must be why they're individually wrapped, that roll would be too big for your pocket.

That's what the Altoids tin or pill bottle are for.

Seriously, I carry all my spares in my road bag. Extra strings, batteries, string winder clipper, cables, cleaner, micro fiber polishing cloth, pen and pocket sized flip notebook. Great for jotting down critical information!

In my case I have a spare strap, micro fiber cloth to wipe it down after putting her to bed, and clip on tuner (primary tuner is my smart phone app DaTuner). Also use the phone as a flashlight. Always have it with me.

Too much stuff to fit in my gig bag alone, so I got the Mono tick to carry the spares & tools.

Strap, cord, tuner, cloth for wiping down the bass post-gig, spare string set, bottle opener, and a pen or pencil...that's in every case. Other items may be added depending on the gig.
