Another tangent into bowl turning. I made the neck blank too thick for a guitar I'm building. I cut 1/2" off the back of the blank, cut it into pieces, glued it together and turned it into this little bowl. I tried to create a random pattern, and it is random, but it's not random enough.

And here's the guitar, I'm making it for the guy who gave me a bunch of wood, including this piece of birdseye that I bookmatched for the top. Some day I'll get back to building basses. I have many ideas running around my head!

Is it just me, or does that matched pair in the center have spalting that looks a lot like Sauron's helm in the LOTR movies?

On my bench today is my WBO2020 bass: Winter Build Off 2020 - Malefactor 5

Since wrapping it up in March, I've put in +++ hours on it, and have made note of a few little tweaks I wanted to make, especially since this has morphed into my number 1 pretty quickly. I've tweaked the setup a couple of times, but there were some bigger changes to make, and today I finally got them done. When I built it, I gave it hard edges on the top, and found that despite the convex top, the edge still dug into my forearm a bit at my preferred height on a strap. To address that, I marked the ends of where my arm makes contact, and then using a fine file, I gave it a 6mm roundover, and blended the edges into the hard edges. I then bleached it again and when it dried, I hit it with the waterbased finish, and then blended it into the surrounding matte with a scuff pad after it dried.

The final thing was to raise the pickups a few mm. This was a pain, as I could not locate a longer hex cap head bolt to help raise it up. I didn't want to wait for delivery from an online supplier, so I drilled the holes in the pickup covers a little deeper, put in some extra foam below the pickups, and remounted them higher. Sounds a little fuller now. :)

There's so much "stuff" on my workbench that I can't even SEE my workbench!

So let's see here, the paper is full size drawings of 2 builds, starting on the left is a square, there's a machinist's straight edge in that cardboard looking thing (I like to keep it wrapped up when not in use), a couple chisels (that need sharpened), a couple files, a brand new shinto, a brand new fret slot saw, moving up top is a truss rod, then a matching truss rod router bit, the small cardboard box is a set of tuners, then some fret wire, then some bridge saddles and lastly a brand new pair of gloves and a my neck rest over on the far right.

All gearing up for my trip to the shop over the holiday weekend! :hyper::hyper::hyper:

I know there's some stuff I'm missing, but I'll get into that in my build thread because I gots questions!

So my crystal ball says a solid mappa burl lap steel might be on my workbench someday. Maybe after I clear out the other 3 basses already on my workbench...

...or maybe before I clear out those three projects. The desire was too strong on this 1.75" thick piece:

Good news is that I should be able to make a 10" wide lap steel and still have enough left over for a few bookmatch sets of tops too.
