Modified PJ bass - I shaved 1/4" off the back, increased roundovers to 5/8", reshaped headstock, modified for neck ferrules and inserts, and sprayed a pastel blue with varathane ultimate coloured with mixol pigments on body and headstock. I also drilled out the headstock tuner holes for big Fender ones. Just waiting on a counterfeit fender decal *...

Putting together a hollow body for a Warmoth 32” fretless neck. Sapele back, figured maple top.

I’m having trouble deciding on pickup(s) though. It will have to be something I can suspend from the top. And it needs to be passive with a simple wiring circuit. I’m leaning towards a single L45-S in the middle or neck position.

Has he sued Gibson for their reissue?

The algorithm on Facebook marketplace knows that I look at wood and woodworking tools. I'm sort of idly looking for a planer and I'm always dreaming of getting a better table saw. I was less than idly looking at lathes.

I always thought it would be cool to have one for turning knobs and bowls look like fun. Yesterday a Delta Rockwell lathe came up for $40. I figured it would be worth looking at, lots of rust in the pictures, but for $40. Of course I ended up getting it. It really could use a strip down to metal and a complete repaint (and I may do that eventually), but I think I'm going to take that slab of hickory up in my attic and make a bench for it to mount on. I don't have any room in my workshop, so it will have to live in the garage. I wish I took a "before" pic, it looked to be in tough shape.

Today I pulled it all apart, used a flap wheel to remove all the rust then coated everything in paste wax. I checked to make sure everything worked, and rewired the motor, saying the cord on it was a fire hazard is a dramatic understatement. I need to get a pulley for the motor - that seems to be the only thing missing. The motor has a date stamp on it that says 1959, no reason to not believe this whole thing is from that era.

It came with a box of attachments, some of which I understand, some of which I don't.

and a box of cutting tools, I don't think any of these are the really expensive kind, I know the ones my dad has look a lot nicer than these, but for $40 I can't complain!

I went with the L45S at the neck. A whole bunch of coats of Tru-Oil and a bit of wiring, some strings and a truss rod tweak, and we’re done! Nice and thumpy...

This is a Mitchell M100 short scale guitar that I bought at Guitar Center WLA a couple of months ago for $89. Just today I took it off the wall rack to start the conversion to a bass. My plan is to carve the waist to match the sides of the headstock. I have the tuners, Tune-O-Matic bridge and tailpiece, but still trying to decide on strings, probably the LaBella/Gold Tone 25" scale flatwounds, but maybe their black nylon 30" scale. Still need to have a nut made. The 30" will require string through holes near the tail, the 25" will not, but I like the idea of black strings on this bass.

I like the black nylon tape wounds on my 25.5" scale bass, they're kind of a one trick pony but its a good trick.

I got the table for my lathe made. I'll repeat I hate working with hickory, it's so freaking hard and heavy. The table is made out of 2" thick hickory, it weighs almost as much as the lathe itself. I used lag bolts to hold everything together, this thing is solid.

I'm waiting for the pulley for the motor to come in this afternoon, then I'll get the right belt, the one I bought this morning based on guesses is too short. I'll mount the motor on blocks and put those blocks on a pivot for belt tension. Putting that hole in for the belt to pass through was not easy! I'll put some wood over the left hand side to cover where the motor and belt are once I have everything settled. I've got a can of oil based poly that I'll coat it with, I sanded it down to take some of the tool marks out of the rough cut hickory, but it's far from where I'd sand a bass body to. The corners were so sharp.

There's a long story around this stuff in my garage involving in-laws and kids, but I'll get it cleaned up before the lathe spins, ok, before I put any wood in it, ok, before I cut any wood on it. Yeah, that's it.
