My own personal Holy Grail Basses... well I’m fortunate enough to have bought them in 1992 and 2001 respectively. My 1985 Mk 1 Custom Series Wal and my 1979 Wal Pro IIE. They both (the Mk 1 partigularly sound, feel and look perfect to me. They provide me everything I want or need in the playing experience. I love them both!

My Holy Grail is just a nice Precision that plays and sounds great, which by all accounts I pretty much have. I know I'll catch flack for this, but I find it much easier to get a killer bass sound compared to a killer electric guitar sound. Maybe I'm just more in tune with bass than guitar and gravitate more toward it, but I dont find it that difficult to get a good sound out of most basses and have been surprised to not have a want or need for anything else with the two Precisions I have and an Ampeg preamp/DI pedal going through a Fender Rumble 500. Blasphemy to many, I know!
With the right strings and pickup you can make any "new", or "modern" P bass sound "old school". Give it a great set-up and/or a PLEK job or fret level, crown and polish by hand and you're way ahead of the game for a very affordable price.

Isn't the truth of the matter that there is no such holy grail like that, owing to bass players being a bit more grounded and not being prone to head-up-the-ass disease like the players of certain instruments we could mention...
The Stanley Clarke "Brown Bass". I used to go see a lot of jazz bands back in the day, and when the bassist pulled this bass out you knew he meant business. You have to earn the right to play one of these in public (in my opinion).

My grail, will be a Vinciguerra VJ 24 5-string, complete with an Ultralam Lite neck. This guy carries on in Creg Curbow's "Rockwood" neck design.
