What's so great about 6 strings?

Re: six strings suck

BTW, the above mentioned bassists may be inclined to pick up their "one string shy of not sucking" basses, improvise a bass solo, on the spot, for your benefit, that will make you wet yourself.

well, i've met all of them, a few times in fact, and nope, i'm still dry as the gobi. sorry ;)

EDIT: on second thought, some of les's ill-advised excursions on fretless six string have left me a bit nauseated, but that's wetness at the other end. :D

Wow man, I'd hate to be so uninspired one minute, then nauseated the next, just by hearing another person's bass playing.

I'd start to wonder if i had some sort of obsessive-compulsive disorder or something.

John, you ok buddy?

 ;) :D

What is so great about a 5? It will go lower than a 4. If you need to play lower than low E than get a 5. What is so great about a 6? It will play higher than a 4 or a 5. Assuming they are tuned traditionally. Get a 6 if you need to play higher notes than a 4 or 5 will allow. jmho

IMHO the only bassist that is truly creative and really talented in that bunch named by blimpskippybizkt is AJ. Pattiticcis playing is like vanilla ice cream. JOhnny Myung ? PLease ! C'mon I hear the bassist for Judas Priest is playing a 6 now -Boy I bet he ROCKS...

(wearing heat protective suit now...);)

Well I will throw in my two cents since I have nothing else to do currently...

I prefer 5 string or 7 string for fretted and 5 or 6 for fretless. Actually I like 4 for fretted too. It can be really refreshing to play a 4 string once in awhile. Truly less is more sometimes.

I do not like 6 string fretted. I have played a few and recently tried a really nice 6 string F bass that recieved raves from the people with experience playing it. They stated how easy it was to play for a six string etc etc and how you will not find a better sixer (of course this is all their opinion). I think my Conklin 7 string was much easier to handle than the 6 string however. Based on my experiences with basses I would only get a six if it were fretless since I think those work much better in that form. That is just my personal preference in all of this.

Six strings have one more string than five's. That means less moving around the fretboard and lots of range for having fun.

For me, it's really either 4 or 6. If I'm gonna bother with a 5 I'd rather just get the 6 and have the other high string as well.
