Well...I've been lurking for a while, even bought a couple of basses on the BST...and I'm generally impressed and/or amused at the quality of the conversation. Having hung around other hobby/professional fora, I must say...musicians are much cooler than the bulk of random dimwits who congregate online. Seriously--I've seen sensitive subjects handled with intelligence, grace, and wit. Plenty of good-natured, puerile fun, too, but...hey, that's how it is in the band.
All that said, I always find it a bit awkward, entering into conversation in an established, familiar collective. I feel like the guy at the party standing off in the corner, occasionally blurting out something inappropriate. (Hey, wait...That's me...)
So, ladies, gentlemen, and all those who actively or passively defy categorization...How do the introductions begin? And is the hazing terribly uncomfortable?
As in any forum, there are the forum pros or hot shots (as I like to call them). These are posters that are very, very popular, have attracted cult followers and fans. They have upwards of 100s of posts a day, on every conceivable subject. They consider themselves to be experts in everything, and their fans always agree with them.
Of course, I dont know how they have time to actually ply their craft, since you see their posts occurring round the clock, 7 days a week. (I often wondered why, for example, a bassist like Pino Palladino is not the top poster on a forum like this probably because he is too busy actually working, playing bass).
As a new poster, your best bet is to keep your posts warm and fuzzy. Dont have any strong opinions. Dont have any opinions that differ from the current popular theory, despite things like common sense or logic those are outdated concepts on a talk forum. At all times, you want to agree with the top dawgs on the forum. Disagree at your own peril!
Basically, if you look out the window and the sun is shining and the sky is blue .be careful how you say it. I guarantee there will be one of the forum pros who will say something quite different! They might say, no, the sky is green today, as it always is or do a search before posting .and the forum fanboys will all nod their heads in agreement, calling you crazy or otherwise hurling personal insults at you because you stupidly announced you had an opinion that they disagree with..
Thats the way this, and every other forum in existence operates. Millions of self proclaimed experts, very few real experts, a lot of BS , drama, hype and fanboy-ism. Oh, and welcome aboard!
No No NO! Matticus!
I would have to be a popular poster with everyone always agreeing with me, to be one of the forum pros here!
My every utterance would have to be taken as gospel! I would have to play alt rock! I would have to own 5 Foderas (with a 6 and 7th bass being currently made for me by Dan Atkinson) use Fearful cabs....yet gig and do many pro recording sessions with the cheapest bass possible, because I am sooooo special!

Haha! Such colorful banter!
...As I said gents, I'm a journalist. I do my homework, check backgrounds, learn the players. Every forum has its share of stock characters; Fanbois, blowhards, clowns both comic and tragic, gentle sages, and brash young things...I've snooped around long enough to know some of the players...
That said...thanks to all, for a very TB welcome!
