What's the problem with jeff berlin?

Ok, I've been in disagreements with Bryan before and realize that everybody has their mouths open and ears shut. So you guys are right. I relent

Unless you're using a second username, then I don't know what you're talking about- I haven't even posted in a thread you've posted in before this one. Very noble of you to relent on the condition that everyone is talking but not listening......:hmm:

I went through this not too long ago.

Same guy? Or are there really so many musicians that think like that?

:D

Joe.

Nope not me, I used the user name Jericho for awhile and Bryan and I had a disagreement about religion. I think I even used the same mouths open ears shut metaphor. I think I lost my temper and asked the mods to disable my supporting account. If I can't get to the lobby I can't get seriously offended. I'm actually surprised about the reactions people had to this. I can't be the only person who has been playing in a band and have told the guitar player the the chord was a modified chord it as D/G# and have the guitar player say he would just play the D. I honestly believe that this type of stuff comes directly from popular music that is crammed down our throats. I have a friend that was in the navy with me, and used to work at the same company as me. He walked by my desk noticed a Jaco CD and asked who is that. I explained that many people felt he was the worlds best bass player, and his response was he can't be I've never heard of him. He then said I've heard of Aerosmith, therefore using his logic Aerosmith were better musicians. Is this case, I don't believe so. Musicians are a dying breed in this country and I don't like the dumbed down stuff that is so prevalant. I also believe that the lack of music education is the root cause of all of this. Of course you have the rare prodigy that is the exception, but most of us really work at this.

Honestly, the narrower the public opinion, the louder the opposition. In anything, not just music.

Maybe more great musicians can read music and knew theory but it is an ignorant error in thinking to say that in order to be a great or even good musician you need to read or know theory. There are way too many example to prove that wrong as shown by some already.

I desperately wish I knew how to read music and knew theory but I don't. I am working on it slowly but surely.

However...Even if I knew those things now, I wouldn't say that I was automatically be a better musician than one who didn't.

:D

Joe.

EDIT: Please read 'public opinion' as 'opinion made public'.

You mouth has been open quite a bit in this tangent. And your ears are obviously closed to many things. Just saying.
:hmm:

I would suggest you quit complaining and actually seek out new music. It's out there, whether you chose to be unaware of or ignore it or not.

Matter of fact, with the internet, the only excuse for being unaware is really being to lazy to look and too eager to bash what others like instead. Most enlightened musicians realize they can learn things from all sorts of sources... it does however take an open mind, one not steeped in assumptions and negativity.

Or just keep on with the same old same old.

Enlightened? That's a pretty arrogant thing to say, and certainly a direct insult to your contender, Mr. Johnson. And saying that "dumbed down" music is bad is an awful generalization to make. There's a lot of great smart music, if you can call it that, and there's a lot of great stupid music. Open your own ears and listen to your own preaching.

No worries, I don't take any of this as an insult. Everyone can't or won't like a wide variety of music, for all sorts of reasons. I feel fortunate that I'm not saddled with those reasons.

I've been able to listen to whatever music I wanted since I was a small child back in the 60's. Before everything got labeled. I didn't have people telling me this was good and that was bad or I was listening to the "wrong" kind of music and I attibute that to being a big part of making me a better musician

Just for the record, I am a software engineer for the DOD, however I have no degree. At first I was arrogant about this. Later I realized that people with an engineering degree have an advantage over me, based on what they learned in school they can think like an engineer. What I have is just a knowledge of the way the system works. I wish I had the advantage of the degree. Not the piece of paper but the thought process. When I say everything in life should be an academic pursuit, thats the way that I feel, and I will not back down. Sex is an instinct within humans, can we claim music is as well. Maybe in some people. I know both Jaco and John Patitucci learned to read music after they had been playing for years. Maybe. Does this apply to me and every musician I've ever played with? No. I have to work at it. I agree with Jeff Berlin if you are going to learn, learn the fundamentals of music. Instead of worrying about a pattern, you can play all over the place and I find that brings a much more creative approach. Like Dr. Cheese said I am not a professional musician, but I really look up to the pros and I feel like they should have a higher standard.

So what's wrong with that? If you're playing bass you're going to cover the G#, the guitar player really only has to play the D with the G# bass if he's playing the song solo. Even then missing the bass note may not be important in the concept of the song.

It appears that you think pop music is simple or "lesser" music. I completely disagree. Get your hands on some Marshall Crenshaw for one example.

IMHO opinion playing the modified chords are important in Contemporary Christian. It is kind of what gives it the signature sound. I am fully aware that is my opinion though.
