What's the problem with jeff berlin?

I don't have a narrow opinion about what a musician is. I just feel that like everything else in life music should be an academic pursuit. If playing I IV Vs is your thing, than by all means more power to you. Most of what I do is probably within that realm. Do I like Paul M, absolutely. Do I think he could compete with Jeff Berlin absolutely not. As bass/guitar players we seem to have an approach to our instruments that differs from every other musical community. Try to apply at music program at any college without reading music and see how far you get.

Think about what you are saying. Going to business school will not make you Bill Gates. It will give you the skills to be a good manager for Bill Gates or some other tycoon. Getting a music degree will not make you a great musician. It will give you the skills that can allow you to become a great musician if you have the vision and talent. The catch is that if you have the vision, talent, drive, and skill, you will be great whether you go to school or not.

This just does not apply just to music. I am a historian with a Ph.D. but you most likely have not read my publications. On the other hand, I know of self-trained historians who have written academically solid best sellers.

BTW, I am a fairly unlettered, amateur bassist who loves Jeff Berlin (although the bit about being a slap pioneer is silly.) I respect his opinions. I think he really wants to make it clear to young players with high aspirations what it takes to be technically great.:)

The more you write, the narrower it gets.
:D

"like everything else in life music should be an academic pursuit"? Fine... what sex academy did you attend?

"If playing I IV Vs is your thing, than by all means more power to you". This is true... it's damn near impossible to play anything other than a Blues progression without proper education.

"Do I like Paul M, absolutely. Do I think he could compete with Jeff Berlin absolutely not". Fine... lets see his entry at the next Beatles songwriting contest.

"As bass/guitar players we seem to have an approach to our instruments that differs from every other musical community".

How so? We have a relatively young instrument and far more resources available now than ever before... despite what you think, everyone does not need formal training. And yes, I've seen how much that bugs the people that do need it. Everyone also doesn't have the same musical goals. I know... shocking isn't it?

"Try to apply at music program at any college without reading music and see how far you get". Because again, in your narrow POV that is some sort of barometer. How many successful musicians do you think this applies to?
:hmm:

Very last sentence

"Try to apply at music program at any college without reading music and see how far you get".

I got into the music program over here without being able to read. And as such, I took a class to learn how to read music. I completely agree with Dr. Cheese on this one. As for Jeff Berlin, while I don't like his music as much as some other people, I do respect the skill he has on his instrument, regardless of his opinions. Training is not for everyone, and neither is hoofing it on your own the entire way. As someone has already said on this thread, different strokes.

This is actually, along with Dr. Cheese, really intelligent replies to my postings. Bryan and Brad keep trying, I hope you get over whatever is bothering you.

Just responding to the request

Then you failed misrably at reading.

"Because again, in your narrow POV that is some sort of barometer. How many successful musicians do you think this applies to?"

equals

"Successful does not equal talented.....Pete Wetnz, Sid Vicous?"

How could you possibly misread what I said to mean successful equals talented?
:hmm:

Does getting into a music program at college equal talented? It's the same sort of leap.

What you're contending doesn't bother me and fortunately it doesn't bother you to keep saying it. Does having the problems pointed out bother you?

BTW if you think I'm trying to change your mind... wrong. I like the fact that you're saying what you're saying, it's proof that some people actually do think like that

Sorry you outsmarted me Brad. I guess this will bother me for the next, actually it won't bother me. Opinions like these are the reason American Idol had become so popular and why I have to see Jessica Simpson or Britney ever time I turn on the TV. All I know is that quality albums have been extremely lacking the past couple of years. It looks like with the unpopularity of my narrow POV, we are going to go another couple of years.

Have you actually read anything that was written? Opinions that say that quality songwriting and musicianship the likes of Stevie Wonder and the Beatles equates to people promoting Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears in your mind? How could you even pretend to come to the conclusion you just did based on what was written? The opinion that you stated (jazz musicians are better than pop musicians) not only holds no water, but is contrary to the opinions of most any jazz guy out there. Aversion to your opinion is not the cause of bad music being popular. Aversion to your opinion is simply the choice of people who know about musicianship and songwriting rather than assumption that playing jazz equates to being a better musician.

You must not be paying attention. Some great stuff has come out the last couple years in my CD collection.

And I disagree with your implications re: Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears. There's a place for pop and they (and their creative teams) do it very well.

That may be one of the saddest posts I've read in a long time. Thany you, thank you, thank you.
:hyper:

You are truly clueless as to my opinion, because it has zip to do with the popularity of Ameircan Idol. But as usual so far, you somehow see what is not written. I'd be worried if I did that as often... it would bother me if I went back and what I thought I saw was no longer there. And yes, I'd go back.

If you have to see either of them every time you turn the tv on, it's probably because of the channels you left the TV on.

As far as popular music, if you think it'll change in a couple of years, you're dreaming.

Short answer:no. he hasn't read much of anything in this thread.
:hmm:
