Whats up with kids today?

Not that you can't nip certain "things" in the bud, though. Across the street from me are two teenage daughters and while they're not doing anything that's terribly wrong (per say), they and thier friends have been getting a bit more bothersome lately to the point of me talking to thier dad.

Nothing like trying to sleep and at 1 or two in the morning and you're jolted awake by a car stereo blasting away, or hear a car horn honking away from one of thier friends at 1 in the morning because they're too lazy to get out of the car and go to thier door....then you hear the car screeching away. This has been going on for far too long. Can't even begin to tell you how many weekend parties have been going on over there.

So where were the parents? Dad is a drummer who play's every weekend and thier mom ususally accompanies him. Good people, they love thier kids but definatley very lax when it came to any kind of parenting.

He quit the band and has been home every weekend now for about a month. The weekend evenings/early morning hours are now very peaceful around here. It's amazing what happens when the parents are suddenly "around."

By the way....he didn't quit the band because of me. Tales of "other things" regarding his kids have reached his ears and he gave his band the notice prior to me talking to him.

I don't blame kids these days. I blame the parents.

He could install a few "nanny cams", so he could show the little dears that he knows what they have been doing and that it's his house, his rules.

You did the right thing. When you asked the punks to get off your car and they answered "Make Me" the situation was just escalated to a potentially violent outcome.
And if you did try to make them you would have got the heat from the law because you are the adult. These little punk's parents are probably trash and may look at it as a "make some cash opportunity" and sue you for touching their little angels. Again, you did the right thing.

Well, nobody got hurt and nobody was arrested, so I guess it was a good outcome. I'm sure people are tired of hearing about "back in the day", but the truth is the police would have sided with the adult a 20 or 30 years ago, even if he'd given them a smack. These days, if it involves a minor, the chances are it's the adult who'll end up getting arrested. With surveillance cameras and phone cameras, police have to be much more careful or they risk losing their jobs.

Personally, I think teenagers who treat adults with such disdain deserve what they get (within reason). The law doesn't agree though, even if there's 4 of them and one of you. It wouldn't matter to me though - they would have got the hell off my car.

I'm not much older than the people the OP is talking about, so I maybe I shouldnt post here, but I really don't know what I would've done in the same situation.

I only lean against vehicles I know I can (drummers van, friends cars, etc...). Touch my truck as you walk past, fine. Using it as support while you take your lunch break is not cool. At least in my area if I really wanted to I could call my neighbor (local cop).

If I saw a group of kids leaning on my truck, I dont know what I'd've done. If I had to go, I'd most likely jump in and start the engine. If they get their foot run over that"s their problem. If I'm outside and I see it, my 12lb Pbass has a bassball bat neck for a reason....

I think it has to be mentioned, but do your average modern adults deserve the same respect that the generation before them got?

Speaking for myself, I treat everyone with respect. I open doors for women; I always offer my seat to a lady. I address strangers who are much older than me as "Sir". As for teenagers, I treat them with respect too (meaning I treat them as adults). My father taught me good manners and I use them. So the answer to your question is "Yes, we do deserve respect", assuming our actions accord it.

Where did you grow up that this is an appropriate way of dealing with things?

Maybe not so much where, but when. Back in the old days, you could smack the kids around and nobody would question it. When I was a kid, adults were right and kids were wrong. Nobody questioned that arrangement.

For myself, my truck is usually so muddy that teenagers wouldn't dare lean against it without getting dirt on them.

Aside from the "keyboard solutions"... here's real life.
Softball game and the other team is using an illegal bat.
One that can get infielders hurt by the ball speed.

I go over and ask the manager to put the bat away in the bat bag. He puffs up on me and suggests we talk about it in the parking lot after the game.

Game over. I meet him in the parking lot and he takes a swipe at me. Misses. I smack him in the nose. He grabs his nose with his hand. Removes a bloody hand and back steps to his car. Calls 911 on his cell. I get arrested for assault.

Don't want to drag this on but men aren't what they think they are anymore. Those days are over. As soon as the phony "bad ass" is busted, they go for the law.
Pussys anymore.

Maybe my knowledge of history is a little weak at the moment, but I can't remember a time when beating a kid with a baseball bat wasn't considered assault and battery. I also don't know when "back in the old days" is, but we're reaching back to the middle ages at least to substantiate that kind of violence.
