Out of couriousty....Do you have the same contempt for people who play/work in original music bands,but who's role is to carrying out the creative vision of the band's main songwriters?

maybe you should play original music!!?? Just a thought!! The head of the business dept at my college is a amazing upright/electric bassist who played with John scofield in the late 80's/ early 90's, his name is Anthony Cox, I asked him one day, "why aren't you still in NY, why aren't you a bass instructor"... He replied, "I want to be a double edged sword with the music business gig, and it frees me up to pick and choose whatever gig that I'll find artistically fulfilling, so I'm not relying on gigs for income", those words have stuck with me for the last 10 years, even though I'm "in it for the money" with my current situation!!

I've been playing covers for the last 8 years, I don't care for nickelback, but I've never had to play one of there songs either, so I don't hate them, but I've had to play brown eyed girl, mustang sally, I love r n' r, etc.... And as much as its not fun to play mediocre music or overplayed stuff, the audience doesn't see it that way, example: I'm sure the stones get tired playing"satisfaction", but the audience will always wanna hear it(not to compare nickelback to living icons).

I plan on going back to original projects in the next few years for many reasons, money is definitely not a factor either!! ya gotta do what makes you happy, but if your playing bar gigs you gotta play that game, even if it means catering to really drunk 40 something's who just wanna blow off some steam!!

No, that's great! If you have the means and the talent, do it. Hey, we've all felt that way. So post links so at least those here can experience your wares.

What comes to mind is the idea that I can determine the esthetic values of others. Trust me I know this area - I've played jazz for 35 years always being questioned about the 'value' of what we were doing. There's a name form it the threshold you need to overcome - accessibility - is it accessible or relatable to an audience?

I never saw it as one or the other - I liked leading a 7 or 9 piece groups w/ front man, keys, guitar (if necessary) drummer and at least 2 horns

Doing new & pop old R & B , funk & Latin con Fusion

1) not in contempt. As I said, to each their own. 2)not at all, The projects I work in, we all have a share in the creative writing process, sometimes it may be that one person or another brings a complete song or idea to the table, but each of us contributes in our own way. Sometimes we may adjust the parts we are playing for the benefit of the song as a whole as well, an open mind goes a long way there as well as shedding the musicians worst enemy...ego. All said and done though. The joy is in the journey not the destination if your motives are pure.

I dont think I can determine those values, I think that ultimately the value of what youre doing musically is what it does for you and your bandmates to create and play. I do covers from time to time, usually we put our take on em and because we appreciate that artists material. Heres a link to one project that Ive been working with. Alot of the material, the singer/guitarist had to begin with, but as the bassist, and my drummer, we put our creative process into it as well. Some people may like it, some may not, either way, it was fun to create and sculpt the sound over time.

First....Congress has got some damn good tracks there...I really like Desert Smoke.
Second...You are just killing it in that cover of Zepp's Immigrant Song....Your playing and tone is perfect.

As for my previous post....The scenario I meant to refer to is one where the players in a band are dictated to literally every note they play by a BL/songwriter, who hires them in a 'It's my way or the highway' situation....Their own ideas unwelcome.
They may be better paid than the average cover band,but are in fact still covering someone else's music.

I personally wouldnt want to do that type of scenario. I dont begrudge anyone for it. Janes Addictions current bassist does just that. I saw ferrell rip him a new one at a show, it was pretty bad considering the bassist was on, ferrell was off on a verse going into a chorus. I suppose to be honest and realistic though, if the money was right and i was comfortable doing it, I would probably go do a tour for janes as their bassist and play whatever I was getting paid to, I am human lol.

Thanks for the feedback. Dessert smoke was a lot of fun, Shannon had the song for a while, but we just kinda kept tweaking it. The immigrant song was a lot of fun too, We kinda funked it up a little bit, and I played it slapping. Its not the best recordings by any means, I had a hell of time mixing those and getting tone due to the down tuning to drop C# and shannon's guitar set up, he uses really thick strings and plays with a ton of low end, they really rob the frequencies that the bass and kick needs.
