It's probably like fishing line or something similar, my dad had a mini B.B. King Lucille and that's what was on it, little clear plastic strings.

The guitarist in my band has an original one that his dad gave him. He tried to trade it to me for my MIM telecaster. If i didn't like the guy so much i wouldn't have told him how bad of a trade that would be for him.I've said it numerous times on this forum, but I just love a mustang bass in vintage white with a tort guard. There's just something about it. Now to convince the wife I need it

He was pretty shocked when he proposed the idea and I said , "No way in hell man." He then said " I know it's a little rusted, but it plays fine.". Then i explained to him the value difference in the two. He thanked me for not screwing him over. We had a beer, and now he takes MUCH better care of it than he did before.

Aside from a double bass, it's a tough question to answer, but if I could have a bass to only look at, it would be a Rickenbacker 4005. Like this one:
I like it because it has the hue of sonic blue, but is 'transparent' in all the right places.
I really like Carvin's variation on traditional jazz bass. Sadly, they toned down the profile to a more traditional jazz profile.

It's pretty hard to beat the cool factor of a Ric 4003, especially in black with white binding and a white pickguard. I'm also a huge fan of the Marleaux Diva.

Wal MK 2. Quilted maple top, ebony fingerboard and matching black headstock. Fretted.
In the "maybe I can have one some day" category, I absolutely adore the look of any PJ configured Spector with the burled or spalted wood tops. Both the clear and colored translucent finishes are absolutely awesome. One day, I will log into TB and some kind, highly evolved soul will be willing to bestow one upon me for a price that I can afford.
Or I'll have to save up a really long time.
