The trick is having one of your kids play bass as well. Then when the wife says...... You say "Oh. This one? It's for my daughter"
I have an active
A passive
An eight
And
An anniversary gift bass (neck through)
I could see having a fretless added but my daughter has one so....
And she has a vintage short scale.
So pretty good coverage for whatever we need.

A simple question...

I said 'never.' In theory, you only 'need' one. Having enough is subjective.

For me, I have enough when I don't feel like buying another. Right now I have 5 (2 P's, 1 Spector, 1 Stingray and 1 VI), I'd love to add a Jazz Bass to the stable and I keep my eyes open for 'good deals' or interesting things to own, but I'd prefer to wait until I'm gigging regularly or in a project that's recording to add another bass.

My other hobby of interest is cigars. For what I smoke (maybe 1 - 2 a month), my 100 cigar humidor is a bit overkill but, for others that would be a month supply. Hobbies are an area where 'need' isn't the primary consideration...

Different for everyone, and even different for the same person at different points in their life. When I was single, gigging a lot, and had no one to answer to I was at about 28(guitars and basses combined). Fast forward to now, I have 4. 2 basses, 1 electric guitar, 1 acoustic. Probably more than I even need at the moment.

when you dont want anymore?

there's always this notion that we're supposed to be "done" one day.

there's a reality to this. if the instrument is purely a tool, and that tool meets the needs of the owner, that's "done." but, a lot of us are closer to collectors than we are working musicians (and lots of us are both.)

I know a few classical players who've had the same bass for 30+ years, its a tool and it does the job and that's it.

I also know of people who collect swiss watches at $10,000 a piece or often a more than triple that, and they have no notion of ever being "done." they enjoy the collecting, buying/selling, trading, having something rare, making a profit selling it three years later, on to something new and unique that their other collector buddies will marvel at, and on it goes.

in comparison to that hobby (or cars, or really anything people collect) what's wrong with bass collecting- especially when some really fine stuff can be had for the $1000 mark, and world class stuff on the used market can be often found at under $2000.

I really like buying and selling basses. I have several that are with me and are very much tools i've used to earn a living. but i always want to check out new stuff, and i don't have any desire to be 'done.' Basses are awesome and the used marked is your friend.
