When do you know you have too much gear?

When do you know?

Personally I feel like I’m there.

I have 5, 5 string Basses.
3 Fender Jazz
2 Fender Precision’s.
All 5 string. All American.

I have 6 amp heads.
Gallien Krueger MB-500
GK MB-800 Fusion
GK Legacy 800
GK Fusion 800 s
GK Fusion 1200 s
Mesa Subway D-800+

I have 6 cabs
2 GK CX210s
2 GK 410s
2 Mesa Subway 212s

I’m currently waiting on Sweetwater to get stock on the new GK neo IV 212s. I have a pair of the 8 ohm models on order.

Yeah. I got a lot of sh**.

When do you know you’ve gone to far?

Before buying anything bass related, I ask myself two questions:

1) Do I need it now?
2) Will it REALLY help me accomplish a goal?

Examples: I wanted to buy a new Mesa amp and cab. I already had a functioning combo practice amp and I’m not going to be playing out anytime soon. I put the money I would have spent into an investment account.

I went out and bought a BeatBuddy pedal. A guitarist and I jam bi-weekly and it helped us create songs from different genres and jam with the drum tracks. This helped us accomplish our goal of creating music, made our jams more fun, and it inspires me to practice at home.

I would say most of your purchases fail one or both criteria.

You're good on the amps. Still have a long way to go with the basses though. In my opinion.

I know I've got too much when I can't fit any more.

I'm there. And that includes packing them under beds and behind couches.

Need to get a bigger place to live, or sell some basses so I can buy more.

:)

Have you tried hiding them behind the curtains yet?

I sold a bunch of pedals to buy a Helix. Oddly enough, since getting the Helix I’ve been running straight into my amp and couldn’t be happier. If history has taught me anything about my gear habits, I’ll eventually sell the Helix after not using it for a long period of time only to start rebuying individual pedals when I get the effects itch once again. I can never win :)

ariex and i know we have too much gear because when another piece comes into the house, we have to tetris it in after doing some serious planning. his new jackson guitar arrived today, and we had to pull my brown ibanez GSR100EX off the wall in his workshop, and now we have to figure out where to wedge it. it may be time to sell a mikro just for space since it would be a bit over the top to buy a bigger condo for a place to put gear :D
