When do you know you have too much gear?

For me it was stubbing my toe on a hardcase and stumbling into a cabinet stack.

I put everything up for sale and stopped selling when I reached one bass, two amps (tiny combo & medium rig), my smoothie and Zoom B3.

After six months of running my sale and a pack and ship operation, I had over $10k. And room to move around in my man cave.

It was liberating.

A couple new basses have crept in, but I’m nowhere near overwhelmed with gear. Everything except the amps is getting regular playing time.

If I don’t get back into playing out, there is going to be another round of gear purge. Amps will be the first to go.

It’s just stuff, and far easier to accumulate than it is to sell.

It really is liberating, and I always find it nice to know that everything I have serves a purpose and has a place in the “big picture.”

I've sold plenty of stuff I straight up forgot I had until I started going through storage tubs. Pretty much all pedals. Otherwise I don't have anything I don't need/use, nor is there anything I want in particular.

Whatever makes you happy at the moment. In most aspects of my life I am pretty streamlined and brand loyal, so it is no surprise that I am that way with music equipment. Still, weird, new stuff always remains a purchasing possibility.

'Need' 'Want' 'Enjoy' 'Makes You Happy' 'Collect' ...none of it is synonymous. High caliber function is simple and requires little 'gear', however the enjoyment can be very vast, creative and very stimulating in which case there is no 'too much'. Every level of gear amount is valid. And you are not taking any of it with you so I do hope you have some fun.

When do you know?

Personally I feel like I’m there.

I have 5, 5 string Basses.
3 Fender Jazz
2 Fender Precision’s.
All 5 string. All American.

I have 6 amp heads.
Gallien Krueger MB-500
GK MB-800 Fusion
GK Legacy 800
GK Fusion 800 s
GK Fusion 1200 s
Mesa Subway D-800+

I have 6 cabs
2 GK CX210s
2 GK 410s
2 Mesa Subway 212s

I’m currently waiting on Sweetwater to get stock on the new GK neo IV 212s. I have a pair of the 8 ohm models on order.

Yeah. I got a lot of sh**.

When do you know you’ve gone to far?
My Wife tells me.

When do you know you’ve gone to far?

1. When you start thinking about it

2. When you have stuff in storage that hasn't been used for more than five years.

3. When you have to kick one of your children out of the house so you can use their bedroom to store some of your gear :roflmao:

The first two are serious, the third is only half serious. I at least waited until my daughter moved out on her own accord before I commandeered her old bedroom.

I currently feel I have too much gear...Especially basses. I love them so so much but they are just not getting played in the rotation. I am kind of at 10 basses (custom on order) and I realized that the unique tones that I love so much about my basses are being covered by others and so some are just redundant. Example: I have two thumb basses a BO and a NT and the reality is the BO is basically never touched. My new Dingwall is also the most ridiculously versatile bass that it forced redundancy. Anyway I am going to have a big cull and go back to 5 basses. I also have way too many pedals...GAS is a sickness that I struggle to cure. I have no regrets
