When do you know you have too much gear?

When you have to start renting a storage space...

I asked myself this same question today while I was driving to my storage unit to switch a couple of basses for a different bass and an electric guitar. I’m seriously considering downsizing to buy a few dream instruments and call it good.

Personally I feel like I’m there.

I have 5, 5 string Basses.
3 Fender Jazz
2 Fender Precision’s.
All 5 string. All American.

I have 6 amp heads.

GK MB-800 Fusion
GK Legacy 800
GK Fusion 800 s
GK Fusion 1200 s
Mesa Subway D-800+

I have 6 cabs
2 GK CX210s
2 GK 410s
2 Mesa Subway 212s

I’m currently waiting on Sweetwater to get stock on the new GK neo IV 212s. I have a pair of the 8 ohm models on order.

Yeah. I got a lot of sh**.

When do you know you’ve gone to far?

You have too much gear when you have to walk outside to turn around...

You're good on the amps. Still have a long way to go with the basses though. In my opinion.

I know I've got too much when I can't fit any more.

I'm there. And that includes packing them under beds and behind couches.

Need to get a bigger place to live, or sell some basses so I can buy more.

The music room is getting real rough to turn around in. And it’s not the bass gear that is a problem; it’s the drumkit and the guitar gear. The pile of “stuff getting culled” is getting pretty large.

But not the drumkit. Never that.

Well, for me, who once owned a Hammond C3 and a Leslie this question makes no sense. Seriously though, the gear that matters is the instruments, lots of basses, it's never overdone, at some point you're going to need one of these tools. Pedals, amps, cabs, cables, etc. are details. I currently have two pedals, one amplifier and one cab, but I have five (and a new one will arrive today!) basses, and whenever I can I buy one more. My problem is having a home studio in my living room...
