Where in the effects chain should I put the high pass filter?

I keep mine last on the board because a utility pedal that sets the (final) parameters of highs and lows just makes the most sense to me there. No matter what amp & cab I'm using or what room I'm using them in, it's there if needed. I suppose if I had separate H&LPFs I'd experiment with placing the LPF somewhere further up, as that doesn't see nearly as much use.
 
With a linked LP & HP in the same box - I’d try either before your compressor, after your compressor or probably end your chain.

You could always look at the frequency output in a DAW to see what’s happening if your trying to remove bass rumble.

A quick question for the great Talkbass hive mind - I'm rebuilding my pedal board to make room for my new high pass / low pass pedal and as long as I have it all separated I might as well consider changing the order of effects if it makes sense. The Sansamp has to go last since it's my DI to FOH, and the wireless has to go first because duh. Otherwise I'm open to suggestions.

Where should I put the new pedal in the sequence, and should I move anything around?

At the end. In the effects loop. That way it's the last thing before the speaker.
 
And interesting conundrum. The pedals are in the effects send/return chain of the SansAmp, so it would seem logical to put it at the end of that chain. But, you have to leave the effect chain on at all times, if you switch it off, your FOH send would suddenly have much more low end. Some people use that switch as an effect kill switch; If you intend this, and the SansAmp is the last thing in the chain before FOH, I am not sure where you would put it TBH.

Why process all those super low frequencies through the pedals when you're going to filter them all out at the end anyway?
Process the frequencies that you want in your sound, not the ones you don't want!

Agreed, unless there is an octave in the mix, but the snag with this particular setup is that it's a combination HPF/LPF. So, it may work better later if you need to control hiss. With the combo in one pedal there is tradeoff.

I put my HPF/LPF filter last in the effects chain. In my current case it's just before the DI preamp which in my case is just used a volume boost; no dirt and no noticeable EQ adjustments.

My logic: in last position it gives me the chance to filter out any unwanted noise I might get from other pedals.
 
I personally put a high pass at the front end of my chain. Are use sub octave occasionally, and my theory is I want those frequencies to be there since I put them there. And having it towards the front end keeps undesirable stuff out of my compressor and helps my octaver track better

Why do you need a HPF?

Quick/partial/non-technical answer: your amplifier becomes more efficient because it doesn't have to process unusable sub-bass frequencies which also happen to require the most power to reproduce. Your speakers become more efficient for the same reason, and will be less prone to distortion and physical damage, especially at higher volume levels.

Note: some like to cut frequencies that can be reproduced, for example setting the HPF cutoff to 50Hz or even higher. Sure, it can be fun when those bass frequencies make your pants flap (so to speak), but they can create stage rumble, clash with the kick drum, and cause problems (phase cancellations) for sound techs running the FOH (PA system).

Again: IANA tech; this is a partial and non-technical explanation as I understand it.

P.S. If you do relatively low-volume gigs and never push your rig very hard then you might not need HPF, but you still might want it.

I have that very box, but I rarely use it. I let the PA do the heavy lifting, including on-stage monitoring. I prefer sending the full-range signal to the PA where allowing the person manning the mixer(s) to apply the amount of HPF and LPF needed for the room, which is quite common in this age of digital mixers.
