In 1976 the band I was in got a call from our agents: "Cold Blood is coming to the Aquarius [later Parker's Ballroom in Seattle, 1400 seater] and so-and-so who were supposed to open crapped out-- it's no notice, but do you want the gig?" "Hell yes," we said, and for the next three years whenever they came to town, we got to open for them. My particular dose of funk was delivered hot from the Bay Area by Mr. Domingo Balinton, whom no one seems to remember now, but was one of the Bay Area cats who started doing the slap-and-pop thing (then known locally as the Oakland Snap)-- every bass player in town would be down in front of the stage with their mouths open. It took me about ten weeks to figure out what his hands had been doing, and almost two years to be able to do it myself. I am deeply grateful.

I first saw TOP back in the fall of '00. Amazing. Average White Band opened and almost blew them out of the water, as well!
Rocco story ensues:
Young Goose: "Gee Mr. Prestia, I love me some finger funk! How did you play xyz? What kind of strings do you yadda etc?"
Rocco: (looking past me and at the lovely girl on my arm)
"Oh you play bass? Yeah bass is great..."
(Looks at me)
"Say kid, why don't you head over to the stage and check out my bass for awhile... I'm gonna hang out on the bus with your lady..."
My girl and l fall out laughing and then realize he may not be joking!

Cool! I saw them for the first time live back 1989 they played in a place called the Bottom line in Nyc. They absolutely funked the roof off the place.
Oh hell yes!!! I wore my church suit to see Maceo at a small venue at age 15. Probably lost ten lbs of sweat! Fred Thomas was playing a dual P BC Rich bass and destroyed worlds with it!

I discovered the funk as a kid when I heard my first Beastie Boys. That opened me up to some great 80's Hip Hop where I got most my funk from. Ala Tribe Called Quest. I then got more into rock and the 80's metal. Freshman Year of College I discovered Mike Gordon and Phish (not to mention some other things that will be left out). Phish and the jamband scene led to me expanding my mind into so many different genre's that I normally would have dismissed. These days for me it's mostly about old school funk, 60's and 70's. Lately I have been gettin into David Hood. Dude is the White Jamerson if ya ask me. Here's a nice example:
