Visually, the Longhorn does not 'seduce' me, but it sounds good from what i heard and perhaps it is very comfortable/nice to play ?

That's a tough question. Of course, anyone could pick a few basses out that they just didn't like the LOOKS of... but I've owned or used a LOT of different basses, including Rics and Alembics and Hofners and a few pointy ones. And although I'm not rushing out to buy another of any of them, I do recall they all had their special things they did REAL well, certain special sounds/feels that were useful in some circumstances.

I don't think I've ever played any bass that I could just 100% dismiss as ugly and useless. I like the quirky ones as much or more than the mainstream choices, it's just a matter of appropriate application... sitting vs standing, genre of music, and live vs recording.

I switch back and forth with no issues. Took maybe an hour of practicing at home to get really used to the fan frets and I switch between my Dingwall and my two fenders regularly.

Interesting thing about G.A.S., at least for me. I can find myself lusting after basses, but not all basses. I seem to be, in some way, inoculated from certain makes and models.

To be clear: I don't distain those basses. I can admire them for their quality, their style, their playability, etc. But they don't make it onto my drool list. Not always sure why.

For instance:

• Overly pointy basses. Even a gorgeous instrument like an Alembic Spyder just strikes me as too much extraneous wood. View attachment 3467962

• Rickenbackers. Oh, stow those audible gasps. I'm not committing heresy, I'm not dissing Rickys, and I'm not even mildly criticizing them. They make me smile when I see them, and I will happily root for the aficionados of the brand. I just don't, for some reason, find myself tempted to buy one.View attachment 3467974

Anyone else? Again, this is all in the spirit of examining one's own compulsions, not disparaging the makes/models themselves.

Well, number one would have been the headless, Bo Diddley looking Steinbergers, but somebody beat me to it and already listed. Number two on my ugly list goes to this relic. Everyone in my neck of the woods seemed to want one during the early 80s. I also hated the sound and that damn cold aluminum neck..You’re looking at the Kramer 450Z and DMZ 4001. Drum roll...

I've had all the GAS. I've seriously considered (albeit briefly) buying some truly outlandish instruments in my time. Never anything with more than 4 strings though, that's where I draw the line.

I actually like how the Kramer’s looked, but those necks were really unstable IIRC, the heat of your hands would make them expand or contract. They had a wood insert version that was supposed to fix that.... but didn’t.

I've had GAS for just about every style of bass one can think of at one point or another, so strangely I can say: None, that I can recall!
