And they may be!
When I was 10, in the 80s, a friend and I were sitting at the local park (in Brooklyn) and these old guys were playing. We witnessed some other kid our age who grabbed the ball that was just rolled, to return it to the old guy who had just rolled it. Kid got smacked on his head, went home crying and then showed up a few minutes later with his father who started cursing at the old guy and pushed him a few times.
While this was going on, one of the other old gentlemen signaled some guy who ran across the street into this cafe. Next thing you know, four guys showed up with bats. Luckily, the kid's father didn't get beat, but one guy did shove the bat in his face and told him he'd better never see him or his kid anywhere near the bocce court again.
I was that stupid kid once, too, sort of. I was at said cafe playing video games and was out of quarters. No one was at the counter so I went to the back of the place where I stupidly opened a door. There, on the table, lots of cash and a poker game in progress. Cafe owner/manager yelled at me and when I explained I just wanted quarters, he snatched my ONE DOLLAR away, grabbed a huge handful of quarters from some drawer, shoved them in my pocket and said, 'didn't your mother teach you to shagin knock? Get outta here". Probably gave me like 15 bucks in quarters! Played with my friend for another hour or so, then treated him to pizza and a soda with the "hush" money, hehe.
