I have a lefty '78 (pre MIM,MIJ, blah, blah blah); it has both covers; the mute; and flatwounds. Which Precision do I prefer? I prefer MINE. I have no intention of ever getting another anything even remotely resembling a P-bass of any make or description. I"m sure it would be both pointless and disappointing.

2012 Am Standard with Custom Shop pups - complex voicing, utterly killer.

And not just Fender. Atkinson, Read, Lindsey and the Duck each have a special place in my heart. I love the sound of a Precision. Any Precision. Oh good heavens, I'm up to a dozen. And I haven't even got hold of an LB-100 yet.

Most of these basses are passive. That's cool and I have a HW One Precision that I like. When you add active electronics you can be brighter, bassier,and louder with the twist of a knob. My Deluxe Precision Bass Special does that fine. Why are these basses almost always PJ combos? Why not just the trusty P pickup? How about a 51 with stacked bass and treble controls?

Standard P in lake placid blue, maple board with black block inlay and a gold pick guard. Tone rolled all the way off makes for the best studio bass ever. For me it's not versatile for what I play in a live setting.

My problem is I do not trust fender as a company at all(and do not like the copies that other companies make) and will always end up selling whatever pbass I get my hands on because my other basses always get more attention, but always crave one when I do see a sexy one with a killer tone. It's a vicious cycle....

Actually, with all four P coils on it doesn't really sound like a P, in fact it doesn't even sound Fender-y. It's an interesting tone but I don't use it much. The bass gives a great reverse P tone, however, and I use that as much as the standard P.

And I agree with you: the Fender P will always be a great bass, but other manufacturers offer some excellent variations. I definitely want to try the Dingwall SuperP5 sometime soon!

This has been my go to P-bass for a while. It's an 81' Fender body, '09 Fender Highway 1 neck, Curtis Novak pickups, Hipshot Ultralights, original old school Badass bridge and as of November last year is now sporting an 18v Aguilar OBP-2 preamp. Lots of fun to play.
