Which wireless? (Shure/Line 6/Boss)

Which would you recommend?-based on your experience

I have gigged the Shure GLDX-16 for a couple of years now; probably 75 shows or more and it has been excellent and reliable.

I power the tuner/receiver with a battery power pack as I don't run any other pedals. Easy, reliable and I don't need to plug it in. My power pack lasts about 6 hours, the transmitter lasts at least that long but I have never tried to go longer with it.

What do you mean by power pack? Can you post a link please?

i was in a band where i had the G50 and the other guy had the GLXD16; the shure was just obviously better in terms of signal strength, range and reliability.

that's what prompted my upgrade to the G75, which i've been very happy with

What do you mean by power pack? Can you post a link please?

I used a TalentCell 12V 3000 mAh to power the wireless. Here is a link to the companies website entry:

This takes advantage of one of the nice specs on the Shure, it will take an input voltage of 9 to 15V with either connector polarity. If you want to run your pedals off the same power pack you would need to use a polarity reversing cable and perhaps knock the voltage down to 9V. I used to use a Sansamp at 12V on the same board but I am not sure if it is recommended.

I have both the G50 and the Shure GLXD16. I much prefer the whole setup of the Shure, but unfortunately I just get heaps of dropouts from it.
Never had a single dropout with the Line 6.
I've played small clubs to large festivals with both of them, and the only issues I've ever had were from the Shure. So annoying. I love the rechargeable battery and the tuner on the receiver. Wish I could trust its performance.

Line 6 G50 user here. Been using it for over a year now at 3 to 5 hours jam sessions twice a week. Batteries last 2 1/2 to 3 sessions using Duracell quantum batteries. Been out on several gigs and never had any dropouts or issues, not even had to change to a different channel with many other wireless devices around. No issues with the battery door, is made of metal. Only thing I did different out of the box was order and use a Sure angled jack cable. Can't comment on other units as this is my first wireless.

All of the units mentioned in this thread are.. "digital" ..meaning 2.4G band.
In the US, that's 11 channels, with ch1, 6 and 9 that are non-overlapping. If you have 2 devices on stage, setting one to ch2 and other to ch3 will potentially cause issue. Set them as far apart as possible, or pick 1,6 or 9!
With all the smart phones with wifi capability in use and venue wireless, it's a pretty cluttered spectrum.

For the average pedal-board mount unit, the distance between xmit/recv is fairly short, but still open to interference from other devices.
The only way to avoid that is to get something in the 400-500Hmz band, which usually is more expensive.. and is also competing with IEM and wireless mics in the same range.

From what I've seen/read, interference and dropout are NOT necessarily the fault of the floor units, but due to signal clutter at the venue in question.
Logically, if the device was faulty, one would get this behavior with every use, even when using at home.
 
What would be the "non-digital" system you would recommend?

I don't have a specific "vendor/model" recommendation other than the one I've had experience with - Senn EW100 (G-band).
I'm a Senn fan btw - not for any other reason than their gear has never let me down!
They have EW and XSW series - different price/feature set but running in the 400-500 Mhz bands.

Shure has their QLXD, BLX and PGXD (900Mhz band) also. Again different price/feature set.
AuditTechnica has their ATW series..

There are some newer units (Carvin WG5?) that are "5G" (5800Mhz band)- but no experience with them, other than what I've read.


With any of the 400,500 or 900 Mhz frequency ranges, you NEED to chose the "band" with the most open channels for your specific area/zip so you don't get interference from local TV stations broadcasting OVER your frequency.
Each vendor has their own labeling system and operate across different sets of frequency ranges ("band").
Check the doc in my sig for URL's that will do that for Senn and Shure.

I think I have one for Senn Europe in there. Europe has different regulations from the US FCC split of channels, so you might be OK.. Plus, yuou have 2 extra channels for 2.4G (13,14) that the US doesn't.
