Who has the growl?

I do like a burpy jazz growl, a lot. Fresh strings, a good twiddling on the eq and some low action.
But Warwick has some good woody, deeper growl. -A good example is the link below, Stefan Lessard´s bassline on "Don´t drink the water" by Dave Matthews Band. Really dig the sound the bass makes in the bass ick in the verses.. Pretty sure Stefan uses a Thumb 6 on this track.

I´d say a this kind of "deep growl" is found in necktrough basses. Spectors do have good growl, but the high mids are often more prenounced than on a Warwick.
I love Spectors.

Pickup position has a lot to do with it.

Warwick, StingRay, even a Jazz—yes. However here is one you may not know: the Korean-made MTD Kingston passive single PUP (MM position) 5-string. Cheap. Great. Here is Anthony "Turtle" Nembhard in a Boston Music store slappin' one around:

Hey

Just wanting peoples input here.
I love a bass that has heaps of growl. So, what basses are the best for this? Especially on the low B string.

I heard a Warrior & it sounded awesome, I know people will say Warick Thumb bass, but the neck is a bit fat for me.

So, which bass has the best sound AND heaps of GROWL? Grrrrrrr

Ok, post away :help:

Growl is not the bass ... it is the player and the amp and effects ... The right player can get pretty much any bass to growl ... turning up the mids is a big part of it.

I don't know about that... Pickup type, pickups placement, body wood type, and string choice are pretty crucial in growl. Sure, just turning up the mids will help (though certain mid freqs will do this more than others). But some growl most absolutely comes from the bass. (I agree that a lot of it is the player)

I have a jazz bass and swapped out the CS 60s pups that came with it for Delano jmvc 4 fe/m2 pups... My playing hasn't changed... The growl coming from my instrument sure has. Not sure if you consider pickups to be more of an effect, but I think of them as part of the bass. Pups and wood choices def play into growl.

My spector fretless growls it's ass off, that's all it does and if I didn't like growl I would have to sell it, but hey it's the only sound I like.

Here is a perfect example of the "Growl" sound and it's snarly too!
This nails it! Turn it up!!!
And this is direct in no amp involved....

Nice chops, Gabriel51!
Digging the sound of your Stingray. -Low action setup?
I like it when you can make the sound snap at you when you put a little elpow on the notes.
Damnit, now i want one.
