Who has the growl?

My Ibanez SR500 lefty has tons of growl... and much character too.... my friends can always tell when I'm jamming in the neighborhood, the Ibanez basses have a sound all their own.... growl

I'd say the Warwick Thumb NT growls the most. I can't see a Spector competing with it - they are completely different instruments.

Jazz basses just burp.

i have a squier VM jazz and i get a decent amount of growl whenever i want. bridge pickup slightly down, tone pickup at 50% and i got 3 months old dr sunbeams (or similar) right now and i get the amount of growl i need. which isnt that much but i can get more depending on my touch and the on-bass settings. i think growl comes with the player rather than the bass. the growl potential of basses may vary but you see, squier vm jazz and i gets what i wants

There's plenty of basses that can make such a sound. just to name a few, there's schecter, ibanez, warwick, rockbass, spector, ltd, peavey, musicman, and zon. each of these basses can easily deliver growling sounds. all you need to do is set the controls on the basses and you're all set.

By the way, the last time we spoke I was working on that tone in my home studio. I've gotten close...VERY close. Unfortunately I've been a bit lazy to record a proper track and post it, but I plan to as soon as I get a chance. I think I'm probably 90 - 95% there.

Flea's Wal tone is my favorite of all time. Have you hears Sir Psycho or Power of Equality? The isolated track of the latter is on youtube... Just plain mean.

Spectors, yes... but I prefer the growl of a G&L (i.e. L-2500)... they can be beastly...

Also, yes... set-up and string choice can affect the amount of growl in your sound.
