Um, well, I know what it sounds like, but I find it hard to describe. Pretty sure it has to do with the mids, not a super clean sound.

I use a Cirrus and don't consider it particularly growly, but with amps/settings and playing style I can get it to be super growly in the mix.
I tend to think this way also. A lot of the growl you are looking for can be achieved with your setup, signal path and amp settings.
My Jazz has a nice snarly sound when I need it, so too the SR5. A lot of people say the 'Ray can be to twangy or bright, but it's a matter of EQ and amp settings IMHO.
I love Geddy's growl on his Ric too. Maybe it's in your playing style and that ethereal individual tone that each player has? If I bought every piece of equipment that Geddy owns, and set it up exactly as he does, I still doubt I would sound exactly like him. It's in the brain and the fingers...
