IMHO, that is a nice overdriven tone, which is perhaps similar to an animal's growl, but AFAIK, bass growl is more about clean mid-present horn-like tone. P-basses are great, and I have 2 and have have had many, but they don't really growl, IMHO.
I agree with most of comment about Spector "growl". Look no further mates, that is the best "growl" i've heard

I always thought these were good examples of natural, mid range growl - entirely different from an overdriven Chancellor type growl. Technically they both require distortion, but some basses seem to have it even acoustically - Warwick and Spector, for example - and just naturally find that mid-range half-nasal, half-grunt sound.
