I have a buddy who was in the 400 range...I sold about 15 for him last year but he's still packed to the rafters. He wants to get it down to a manageable 50 or so...

I believe (or at least hope) that you were just kidding about that "decade without a string change".
I change my strings regularly only when I am gigging regularly. And that's every 5th or 6th gig, So if I play three times a week, I change the strings twice a month. Otherwise I change my strings at least once in a month or two, depending on their condition.
I have
1 Squier VM Jazz w/ Badass II
1 Fretless Dean Edge 09 (my first bass re-purposed!)
and once the summer is out (hopefully), a doubleneck comprised of a vintage Harmony guitar and CMI bass
3: it's a magic number. XD
Well if it works for you than I'm OK with that.If it ain't broke don't fix it... I really couldn't say how long it actually was, but they were flats and I wasn't going for a super bright tone. I believe I read somewhere, James Jamerson had the same set of strings on his bas for a much longer period of time. My cello and upright probably had the same strings on them for more than 20 years. I've never broken a string on any instrument other than guitar. When I was in high school and didn't have a job, I used to take my electric bass strings off and boil them for a brighter tone. 25 years later, I just keep my strings clean, and clean my hands before playing.
So again I ask, what is the reason for all the string changes?
Edit: admittedly OT, my apologies.
Last time I counted, I had 61 basses. I've bought a few more since then. Here is a big chunk of what I have -

Wow, I'm curious...how does one sell around 200 used basses of the same model, color, etc? I mean, you can't just put them up on the TB classified!
