Who has the largest bass collection here?

Yeah, if I ever need to justify an expense like that, the shoes argument comes in handy.

Of course, anytime I have more than 3 basses I feel like I'm wasting...something? Frankly I only use 2 for just about everything. Even having 10 basses sounds ridiculous to me, I would feel really weird about it. Clearly that's just me though.

I would like to add a few more. A 5 string USA Cirrus, a P bass, a jazz, and maybe if the budget wouldallow it someday a Bordwell Singlecut 5 or 6.

I have 20 including 1 Accoustic upright, 1 AEB, 4 5'ivers, 9 Fenders. Not a lot by TB standards but I think I have most of the bases covered. Someday maybe I'll get 6 er.

I have 4. Really wanna get rid of one as it was a bad investment in the first place. I have a fretless Fender Jazz, a fretless Ibanez Precision from '76 and an acoustic that I keep back at the parents place when I go home when I have breaks from Uni.
The one I'm trying to get rid of is a Carlos Precision. Just doesn't feel... good. Like something you'd find in a dumpster. And it ain't the setup.

For me it's not about quantity (although I have 14 - 2 SX, 2 SR, 1 OLP, 1 60P and the rest 70's Fenders)
100 SX basses is about 2 more than I would want
I've been through a number of P's and J's just to find ones that felt and sounded special to me.

That would be "Hold Me" I credit that video with spurring on my fascination of electric stringed instruments. I too wanted to stumble across such a find. They're all Yamaha's in the vid I believe.

The black MM is a 1980. One of the last string-through-bodies. I'm not interested in selling, which of course is how I ended up accumulating all that stuff.

Funny, I despise greed, materialism, hoarding, and the psychology of scarcity and control that they reflect.

BUT to the dude with 61 basses (Boston here too!), I have to say that at some point a big collection reflects real love, knowledge, discernment and intelligent curating. I think your collection makes a lot of sense. I actually hope it grows. Why not document the American electric bass? Well done. I just wish you could set up a permanent collection in the public domain, rather than scatter them as you need money or pass away.

It never occurred to me to collect them as investments. I just bought them as they came along in the 90's when they were affordable and I had a few extra bucks.

Also, speaking of the dream of finding a large cache of instruments...I have this re-occuring dream where I go to this rich old man's house...and he's got this HUGE mansion. Every room has a different collection in it...and I get to the guitar room..and there's EVERYTHING amazing there....pre EB Stingrays, Jazz basses with matching headstocks, pre CBS Fenders, vintage Rickenbackers, Status basses, basically, every type of High-end/rare/vintage/desirable bass everyone on talkbass raves about...then...the nightmare....I can only pick five.

Both your claim and that of the poster to which you are responding are purely subjective.

In reality, a bass isn't a "need" at all.

However, I fully endorse anyone who wants one owning one, or 200 if they so desire.

YES! Unless you were born with a trust fund, down the road you will regret not being more frugal. I had good jobs and went through a LOT of $$ from 17-30, I could have easily siphoned off 5-10% to invest, and now I wouldn't have to be working and could have dozens of basses to play on my estate. In Hawaii. With lots of island girls.

These threads always make me feel less guilty.

I peaked at 8, not counting my unfixable first bass (a Vox Cougar with a ski-jump neck which will soon be hanging on my wall). Another bass, my '80s Ibanez P copy, has neck issues so it's in retirement (I'm too sentimental about that one to sell it).

Counting the Ibby, I'm down to 6 now. I sold two really nice basses in March because I just had too many to keep up with. I plan to unload another as well, it feels good to be a little more "focused".
