Just curious , I learned everything on guitar using a Jazz improvisation book as a kid , hence I really learned to play modes across the fret board , I still use some of it to stay in key ( Much less than gtr ) I try not to over play and stay in the box on bass and focus on groove and pocket.

I pay more attention to the chord and where the key is/moving to in a macro sense. It’s easier for me to think in terms of chords and keys then it is to think of modes…but I’m also not a soloist virtuoso tour of player.

Yes defo. Modes are rad. Each has a flavor, and many songs and styles really lean on them.

For example:
Mixolydian and Dorian are used a lot in funk. It’s the major 6 - flat 7 thing.

Also you can superimpose them over chords to have a go to scale over certain chords. Like playing locrian over a half diminished chord, or mixolydian on a dominant chord.

It WILL guide you to the “money” notes in those contexts.

Knowing that a lot of bassists are using that as a framework can help you learn lines easier or write your own with similar feel.

You can make it complicated, but essentially it’s what scale degree you’re starting on. The notes in G Ionian, F# Locrian, and B Phrygian are the same, just set in a different order because of where you start. I don’t think I put that well but I need coffeezzz

i use modes often, not a lot of different ones, but use them often. For me It’s a way to be creative but still remain under the radar.

Oh yeah I love the setup. I have been using it since 2005. One bass, one amp. I sold my original 400 but ended up getting another after trying a few other awesome heads (Mpulse, Buster, D180, Titan). The 400 has a thing for me when the Master is opened up enough that it compresses and grits up the clangy transients (allowing me to play with a heavy attack suitable for metalz), and especially with JJ KT88's loaded.

This was a mix with the raw bass-

I know how to derive the modes contained in the Major scale, but only use the Ionian, Dorian and Mixolydian modes. I also use the half-step/ whole-step diminished scale when playing over an altered dominant chord. That's as far as I'm willing to master and use modes.
