Indeed. I don't even think every song needs a guitar solo. Most don't, in my opinion.
Yes indeed. Between the ridiculously extended intros and the gratuitous guitar solo (sometimes multiple solos) you hear in a lot of music these days, it's pretty obvious that many bands are just trying to stretch out a too short song.
When once asked about the famous extended solos the Police used to take in their early years, Sting went on record as admitting it was only because they didn't have enough material for a full two hour concert. And since they had a band policy of not incorporating covers, they had to stretch their own material as much as possible until they hit their third album and finally had enough songs.
