Who played in Kenny G live?

Fair enough, and that makes me realize that I misstated my point. It wasn't really that the masses deserve better -although they do- it was that just because something sells a million units doesn't make it good or praiseworthy, unless you're an accountant. Do you think somebody with cultured food tastes will praise McDonalds food just because they sell so much of it? Will a bassist who plays a Sadowsky praise Ibanez basses just because Ibanez sells so many more units than Sadowsky? Obviously not- both McDonalds and Ibanez must be judged on their quality, not their sales figures. Same goes for Kenny G. Again, maybe it's wrong of me to tell people they "shouldn't" like white bread -after all, they'll buy whatever they like- but that doesn't mean I can't say white bread is crap, it's bad for you, it has no flavor, and here are some examples of good-tasting and nutritious bread.

That "period" is your own limitation. I disagree completely, I believe art is also an education. Yes it is completely subjective- but that does not mean a bland, boring piece of art is inherently praiseworthy, not even if I can sell a million copies of it. And that is why merely saying that Kenny G sells millions of records does not mean, to me, that he is exempt from strong criticism of his "art".

For the record I have no opinion of kenny G as I have never really listened to his music, I just agree with the point above, and am tired of the "if it is popular it must be good" mentality.

I wonder just how many of the Kenny G haters have actually been to a Kenny G concert?? Out of tune? BS! Boring? BS! If you actually did attend a Kenny G concert, you'd know exactly who Kenny can 'hang' with! Just because he doesn't play straight ahead jazz doesn't mean he can't! Sure, he found a niche and ran away to the bank with it! So what! Actually go to a concert and report back just exactly what was boring. Oh, don't forget to bring your tuners so you can prove he was out of tune or sharp!

The minute Pat Metheny went on about Kenny G, I lost all respect for him!

You missed your point there, Sadowsky and Ibanez basses have completly different prices so they cant be compared, Kenny G and Pat Metheney cds cost around the same.

One plays music for the masses and the other plays for a few "educated" ones IMO.

I think I understand basically where you are comming from on atleast one point. As musicians we kinda know when something is lame but the masses eat it up! fair enuff but, I just don't think Kenny was "that" bad lol. AS for art being subjective... thats can't be argued. However, yes someone can be taught to appreciate the arts but, how much of the teaching is enlightening and how much of it is being told what to think? Hmmmmmm ;)

BTW I never said just because something is popular it must be good. I said If someone is selling millions of records a "few" folks must like it (good or bad).

Kenny G's band members are among the best musicians in the world so unless you are Stanley Clarke you are completely out of line and Stanley would never be so arrogant.

I agree that the Kenny G songs that get played on the radio are very boring for most musicians but his live performance is something else entirely. What I admired most about his performance was his ability to get out of the way and let the rest of the band shine. Pat Matheny could learn something from him...
