Young mister Wooten is by far more accomplished at this technique than either of the other musicians. He's not as one dimentional when using the slap techniques because his rythmn, lead and most importantly "concept" for even using the slap style is more obvious than theirs. Their use of this technique seems to be to sensationalize their playing were Mr. Wooten remains far more musical without the need to "show off"!!
I'm tired of this technique and its nothing new just about every jazz bassists could cut this back in the 30s up through the 60s, its nothing new and was certainly not invented by anyone wearing a diapor on a bandstand or some Frank Zappa wanna be!!
I think theres a video floating around the net of Willie Dixon working with Hollin Wolf and Mr. Dixon takres a short bit using a slap technique on his upright. If anyone finds these gymnastic, percussive, exercises appealing check out Mr. Dixon ripping it up. The newest most inventive accomplishment in music is still Louis Armstrong changing how people sing, up until Pops everyone was monotone or a poor slice of opera. Pops invented the modern approch to singing and orther than Les Paul being a "modern" musician and having a wonderfull mind to think of concepts of sound then actually invent the machines to make them a reality, theres nothing new. Imagine trying to compare a young fellow like Flea to Les Paul, I don't like comparisons when it comes to playing an instrument but sometimes on the forum theres almost a sports mentality as if theres a winner and loser. Is there a fellow out here today who compares to Les Paul? I wonder if he has a recording of slap style bass?? I hope not! Doc
