Who's White?

Awrite awrite awrite! This is good!

First: What's wrong with 1 and 3? I thought that in 4/4, the emphasis goes S/w/M/w - was I taught music theory wrong? :D

Secondly: Joey, since we're kinda-sorta on the subject of racial discrimination, innit wrong to be discriminating based on sex? I mean, I'm pretty straight, but I figure that, given the correct incentive (Laklands... lots of Laklands!), I could probably learn! :hiding:

Thirdly: Very interesting about the Irish thing. Along those lines, would somebody who's ancestry involves several generations of Canadians or Americans not be considered white? Does nationality trump physical attributes? How about black folks (native ones) from the Caribbean as opposed to black folks (again native ones) from Australia? Is it okay to just refer to them as black? What do they refer to themselves as? Do I have to say I'm 50% French-Canadian and 50% South Korean, or can I just say that I'm a white/asian halfsie?

Fourth: Interesting that you never found being called black a bad thing, Kwesi; I find that neat because many times in my life, I've been involved in white-bashing discussions - usually instigated by Asians or multiracial groups - and when I protest in defence of the whites, they have always absolved themselves by saying something along the lines of "We don't mean you, man, you're not white!", thereby implying, however subtly, that being white is not a good thing. Am I reading too far into this, y'think?

Definitely white - fry in the sun. (Can't dance, can't jump...) But then, one of my friends growing up fried in the sun, too. Even though her mom was very light-skinned white, her dad was black and she got her skin tone from him. We all though it was odd when she showed off her sunburns. Interestingly, she considered herself white since her mom was and her dad was no longer in the picture. She also really didn't understand why her private school would only allow her to date black guys when she was just as white as she was black.

I have a friend whos family is from Trinidad. He hates it when people refer to him as "African-American", he says "Im not from Africa, yo!" He calls himself black all the time.

BTW Lavenius...it's Asian, not Oriental. I believe Oriental refers to things, while Asian refers to people. I don't want jive or maki coming in here and raising hayul :)

Is it?

I always thought that Oriental referred specifically to Asians from the Western (as viewed from here) Pacific Rim; i.e. Japanes, Korean, Thai, etc; whereas Asian technically (geographically) refers to everything that is not Europe, North or South America, Africa, Oceania, Caribbean, or Antarctic.

I have a friend from Trinidad, too, and she says the same thing. Interesting.

lol! Wow, deja vous...Yes, I've been in this as well with the wife's family. I've sat and listened to them really shamelessly bash white people in general, when I speak up they tell me "don't worry you're one of us, man".
Kind of a weird thing I'd say..

If you snap your fingers on beats 1 & 3 when you dance, you are white.
Dangit -- you beat me to it. :D

That's a difficult topic. For example, my ancestors on my mom's side were from Spain, but were slaves in the South (Georgia) before moving to Texas after the war. So it's possible I have some black genes, but they'd be pretty watered down at this point. But if I did, would I consider myself black? Nope.

Maybe being called "white" has a slightly different connotation than being called "black." I've never considered being called "black" a bad thing
