why are some fenders made like this

So, if you would buy a Fender relic to take out of the house for gigs, while leaving your trusty '62 at home, would you also leave your vintage wife at home, and only go out to a bar with your road worn girl friend? A lot of players consider their bass, vintage or otherwise, like their wife. I, for one, would NEVER do either! (the last line is for my wife if she is reading this)...

I do agree with you that RW guitars are fakes. They are trying to look like something they really are not. But does this make the guying playing one a fake too??? That may be streching it a little.
BTW, I try to take care of all my bass guitars. It hurts when I ding or scatch one.

I guess your calling me a poser then right? I went to buy an American Standard Jazz and walked out with a Road Worn because of the SOUND and FEEL. I couldn't care less how it looks. Yet you both obviously are so vain as to, heaven forbid, be seen as a 'poser'. You both are Hypocrites judging others for something you obviously have a problem with.. Where's the logic in that?

Dude, you're not a poser. You're a bass player. Play what the **** you want and let criticism go through one ear and out the other without stopping. As long as you like it and serve the song, you're cool with me and should be cool with every other bass player out there.

With all possible respect I agreew with you. I got a drgree in Chemistry and worked a corp job. I can afford better gear than most working muscians. I do wonder about the irony of the situation.

But I still won't buy an artifically reliced guiatr.

I am curious about what non-musicians think about the "aged" look.

I think I will take a random poll tonight during my shows and ask people..

"Do you think A.. My bass looks old because I am an experienced musician or B. My bass looks old because I don't know how to take care of my gear ?

I am curious about the results.

Only problem is that on my backline I have an actual early 70's Univox P-Bass clone, that really has earned its battle scars the honest way... It's my backup bass that has been handed down 3 generations . I think I should leave it in gig bag as not to sway the vote.

So to you it matters more what others will think of you or, let's say how "legitimate" your gear is right? And you'd "laugh" at anyone using a "fake" from a distance?

Wow, tough man you are... You should probably go back to looking at yourself in the mirror before judging others for the gear they use and before assuming to know the reason for those choices.

i personally like the look, but no matter how mush i play my p (its 14 years gigged) the body still looks pretty great (due to the poly finish). i am my in the process of refinishing my bass (all nitro). that way my bass will actulally age. but i want it to be from my use, not because it was made to look that way. i still think some of the relic jobs are real cool, but......so does that make me a poser?
i wouldn't have any problem buying a made to looked aged/worn bass, as long as the relic job looked good.
with that said i am attached to my p. i really don't care if im a poser. i think it will be cool in the end. i don't really think i could pull of a nice relic job myself anyway.

Wow I touched a few nerves here. Buy a relic if you want, I don't really care. However I don't understand those that say the relic finish is the only way to get the playability they want. Don't all these models also come in the "Time Machine" finish which is a NOS look?

I think the problem some people have with posts like yours is that you are insulting the people who own/play roadworn basses by calling them posers. Saying you don't like the bass is one thing, that is your opinion, but to extrapolate that to a position where you know the intentions (fronting/posing/faking) of others who play them is ridiculous and offensive.

There is an ass for every saddle. Sales and marketing are the process of finding that ass.

It is important to understand what you like, why you like it, and be secure in it. Otherwise marketers will own you.

One of my ambitions as a player is to wear out an instrument by playing it. Buying a new instrument off the rack that looks like it was dragged behind a car kind of cheats that for me. Player wear is the holy grail. Period.

To each his zone.

That is how I see it, but if I play a bass that sounds amazing and is roadworn, I won't let the beatupness turn me off buying it.

No. The roadworn series does not come in a non-reliced finish. The Classic series is not the same thing at all. Every roadworn I've played has been light, resonant, and just a killer bass; much more on par with the American Vintage basses, but cheaper. The roadworns are the best basses Fender makes for the money.

I do not care for the fake RW look but I would never insult or laugh at someone who likes that look. That is just what I would expect from an immature person with self esteem problems.

If I had a bass that looked like the relics, I'd refinish it so it looked well taken care of.

I have already done that with my actual gin-yoo-wine 1963 P. However, I did that in the early 70's when it was just an old bass. The reason I did it? Because it was all chipped up (somewhat like the relics) and what conveyed to me was that the instrument had been abused (which I'm sure it had). That's not something I would do, so I refinished the bass.

If I had another vintage Fender, I wouldn't refin it because I'm aware that in today's market that reduces its value. But if I ever fall into ownership of a relic by some twist of fate, I'll probably refin it.

1963 P, refinished gold metallic about 1972...and taken care of since then.
