This, and "united states" isn't a specific term that applies only to the USA. Argentina is made up of states, so they can (technically) collectively be referred to as the United States of Argentina.

You're right. I would like to give you the names of all the Europeans I met who called me an "American" when I was traveling so you can relay this message to them. I wouldn't be nearly as offended if they didn't refer to one of my traveling companions as a "Canadian". I just thought that was rude. They should have had the courtesy to refer to me as a United States of American. Apparently they've been brainwashed by the jingoism that we've so clearly forced down the world's collective throat.
I think you're looking for a fight where none exists. It's shorthand for USA made Fenders using the fact that when people say "America" they are generally referring to the US. In the UK I often heard "The States" which is an even more nondescript term. Our country has an unwieldy name that doesn't shorthand easily. There's nothing more arrogant or malicious about it.
I can't tell you how many times people think I mean *Made In Albania* when I really mean *Made In Antarctica*

I think you ignored the latter part of my post where I said that the phrase really only applies to Fender bass factories, so every single one of those countries can be instantly wiped from your list.

Why, in the first place. When the terms MIM, MIJ, etc first appeared, started people naming US-made Fenders MIA, And not MIU?

Because when people use a 1 word term for the United States of America they don't call it "United". That's true the world over, not just here in the USA.
As stated by someone before: It's not just Fender. "Made in America" has been the standard nomenclature probably since the inception of the United Stated of America for products...you guessed it--Made in America.

No, we get what you're arguing, but you don't seem to be receptive to any of the logical, factual answers. "America" is simply the condensed, understood name for "United States of America," so they went with that.
That's how it is, there isn't anything more to it. There's no super-secret plot to over-throw the world, there's no prize for cracking a hidden code in the MIA Fender Bible, there's no fountain of youth - it was just a simple reference acronym that caught on.

Why don't we just put Made in the state of California in the country of the United States on the Continent of North America.
That would be: MICCUSACNA (now doesn't that sound much better than MIA? Sounds kind of Native American huh)

Never thought of this. MIUSA would technically make more sense... but so would the metric system and I doubt that's getting integrated here anytime soon
I think after reading this I'm just going to refrain from using the term "MIA" and just respond with "It kicks your basses ass" when referring to anything involved with the origin, electronics, cosmetic condition, playability, tone, or color of my bass compared to yours. Will that solve the issue?
I mean, that's less offensive than using "MIA", isn't it? It's objective, truthful, non-derogatory, and doesn't base the shorthand name of a certain bass on the ACTUAL place where it was manufactured. Is there another country that's called America? Frick no. So I'm gonna call myself an American, since my country is the only country called "America".
Oh, and I see the troll convention forgot that the whole of North and South America was named after an Italian: Amerigo Vespucci. Or we can argue that's not the case, and that it was named after a locality in Nicaragua, which meant "gold". Or, we shouldn't forget the Welsh merchant Richard Amerike. If we don't go that way we can BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH SHUT UP I DON'T CAREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
