Why did Fender stop making Jaguar basses?!

- if a used bass is so sullied, so "infected" and so not up to your standards, how about you keep your "NO NO NO!" whining to yourself, m'kay? By cutting yourself off from the Used Instrument market, you've easily removed yourself from the single best place to find "hardly touched", NOS ("New Old Stock", aka sat in a room boxed up for years) and gear that you'd otherwise not be able to come close to affording. And especially in a place like TalkBass and the "For Sale" forums here, a used bass purchased here is far likelier to be in better shape than a New bass that's been hanging on the walls of your local Guitar Center or Mom 'n Pop, being slapped, picked, and generally wailed on by kids who don't know any better.
...but actually, I for one am glad you've made your little statement - it'll leave top-end gear out there for the rest of us.
~Ian, whose 6 of his 8 basses were "previously owned"... and who wouldn't & couldn't financially own several of his "dream basses" were it not for that fact.
+1 I understand the appeal of the new instrument. I used to be the same way, but I got over it.
FWIW, I have purchased used basses here on TB (for about half of what they would cost new) that were in better condition than most of the "new" stock that is hanging on the wall of GC.
It's better to buy these used, once experienced players have made the necessary mods. I replaced the pickups with noiseless models, shielded the cavity, installed a high-mass bridge, a cream pearloid pickguard and sold the Jag at a loss to me--but a huge gain to the seller, who probably knows who he is and is still thanking me. These were a rare exception where stock models weren't as good as modded ones. There are some great steals out there on these, and I may even get one back.
What's the deal with ripping someone because they want to buy a new instrument? So what? It's his money and he's the one who'll be playing it every day. Why pile on a person simply because their purchase philosophy doesn't jibe with yours? Jeez, maybe we can slam the guy 'cause he wants the wrong color or pickup config?
I love this site for the vast amount of information available from some seriously smart cookies, but dealing with the snarky attitudes reminds me of being in high school.
Check around locally for the Jags: I've got two GCs locally and both have 'em in stock-- new, for five bills.

I agree somewhat.
The older I get (and the older and more expensive my children get!) the more I find myself buying used stuff - sometimes it makes sense because you WILL find a lot of hardly used, near mint condition stuff for sale so it doesn't even make sense to go new in that case.
But there is a certain appeal to having something brand new, to being the FIRST and ONLY owner. Especially if you're the type to baby his instruments and goes nuts because of one light scratch! As much as it hurts at least you know YOU put it there yourself

OP, search around and you will still be able to find a new one in stock somewhere. I know my local music store still had one a couple of weeks ago. I thought I saw a new old stock on ebay not too long ago, too.
P.S. I just searched and found black ones at JR Music and ComputerLink Removed but pretty expensive.
Agree in principle.
Besides we need people to buy new to contribute to GDP, keep the economy going, and supply the used market with hand-me-downs
Some things really are better new. Everyone has their categories. I only buy cars new. "Wrong" decision? Yep. So what?

I kinda feel like with Fender that they pull product periodically (sorta like Disney) just to keep it from being mundane. You can't very well do a reissue if it's still in its first run.
I bought my dream bass, a US Jazz used
and it has been the only bass that has remained with me in my constantly evolving stable over the past 10 years

For everyone who has posted something akin to "What's wrong with a new bass?"... absolutely nothing. Although the vast majority of my current "lineup" were purchased used, I've certainly bought my fair share of new basses when my tastes in instruments was more in line with my income. And trust me, my BH is graduating with her Doctorate and currently job hunting, and as a family of 2 adults who have no intentions on having children and the financial burden that comes with that choice, and who intend on putting our "play" money towards travel and "Grown-Up Fun", a large part off that on my end will be the purchasing custom basses and gear, gear gear! Most here would be gobsmacked regarding the length, real-life cost, and time spent compiling my "Dream Basses & Gear" document on my desktop that I add/remove/change from on a near-daily basis, and trust me - given the opportunity I'll be spending tons of money on brand new custom Mike Lulls, Euro & USA Spectors, Dingwalls, Music Man Bongo, Chapman Stick, Rob Allen, need I go on...
However, when someone clearly very new to the forum, fairly young and clearly somewhat "uneducated" in the market and purchasing of a previously owned bass (which is certainly part of youth, but there's a great deal of difference in realizing that fact and not doing so) posts a thread lamenting the discontinuation of his "dream bass" (which may or may not be true) and alternating between a petulant tantrum-esque "NO NO NO! I will not buy used!" and an almost holier-than-thou "I didn't want one so badly that I'd buy used" without knowing *a thing* about buying a used instrument and the near-new conditions one can find them in, I'm going to mention the haughty, condescending tone of voice that they've posted in. Again, it's hardly the desire for a "new" bass - it's the method in which the OP relegated all else to a "second-class" status when he clearly has no experience in the field.

Fender has stopped shipping the Jaguar Bass. Tried to call in and get a price quote and was told it was discontinued.

10 minutes after it is taken out of the box and played it is "used". It is only "new" while it is in a unopened box or still in the store.
$939.00?? You gotta be serious! 
After clicking this link I can see why they stopped selling! 
I bought a new one the first year for $560.75. I know Fender had some price hikes but that's plum crazy. 
FMIC keeps discontinued models on the site for at least a year, sometimes indefinitely, even when they are out of production and/or importation.
This is old news.
They do it to support old stock still in retailer inventory and to also keep open the possibility of reintroduction if demand for that model picks up again. They also do it for reasons that are so obscure and complicated that I despair of trying to explain them.
