Got an email from Sweetwater wanting me to preorder one of these. There's another, lesser priced model without all the gold, etc. But why do I need one?

As the owner of a 1958 Fender Precision what I’ll tell you is that their great basses, but their are an awful lot other instruments that will fill you’re need of you don’t already own a Precision.

I own a Fender fretless Jazz bass, but have never owned a P bass. I like the finish on this one and the specs look good, but the gold hardware seems garish to me. Fender is offering another 75th Anniversary P bass for $850 (Invalid Link Removed but I always wonder what the actual body's wood is like when a company chooses to only sell ones they've painted. Not thrilled with the color either.

Anyway, I guess the closest thing I have is my Eastwood EUB-1. As a bonus, that bass is fretless and the Fenders aren't.

Looking at both those instruments and comparing them to the features of my 58 Precision here are the features that are very different and important to note. First and foremost would be the neck which is a different contour C vs V which feels very different in your hands. Second are Jumbo frets something you’re never gonna see on a vintage P Bass. Those two differences would be a deal breaker for me. Just my take however.
