Why do people discrimanate?

I have found myself struggling with this as well. People educate themselves as best they can, then choose a set of morals to live by. Lot's of choices, thus lots of confusion and disagreement.

Take, for example, homosexuality. I really have no issues with people who choose that lifestyle. My moral guidelines tell me it is improper. I do not walk around bashing homosexual people, or openly condemn them. When asked, I will share how I feel. I have been called a bigot for how I feel. I do not dislike homosexuality because I don't understand it. It is simply something I disagree with.

How does it make me a bigot if I decide not to associate with people who have very different moral values than I do? If I hated gay people, and hurt them physically or emotionally, then I would understand the bigot accusations.

I always find dumb errors in my posts when I look back at them. Look closer.

I think the line in red is where the whole problem comes from.

I'm in favor of all this gay rights stuff. Wanna know why? Because being gay is not a choice. You're born that way, and there's not way to fix it. It is not a choice. If it was, i might have a problem too.

I guess it depends on what you've actually done that gave people that idea. Some people genuinely don't see anything wrong with their viewpoints, even if they're based completely on stereotypes.

BTW I've still never met anyone who says they chose their sexual persuasion. I know I didn't.

Did you?:)

Just for grins, are there any other groups you don't associate with and if so, why? I'm guessing sexual persuasion is one checklist item, any others?

I try to deal with people on an individual basis. ******** happen in every persuasion.

That's dormant bigotism, you tolerate homosexual persons, but you do not welcome them or associate with them due to your moral slavery. Morals as themself are ignorant based on something I would not like to discuss. Profoundly you are civil and respectful, but you deprive them of there liberties by judging them on their sexual preference and not on there characters. You should try to be more humane in your thoughts and ideals and "morals". Instead of being a closet bigot, because if there was ever a high escalation of ignorance toward homosexuals. You might be prone or morally inclinded to follow the herd and join. Instead of standing out and standing up for your civility and respectfulness.

I have heard many Theological discusions on Homosexuality and the morality of it and the matter of homosexual life in the church. All can say is homosexuals need to be treated with respect regardless of the morality of it. Just curious in two aspects of this greenbassfreak, one what does you family think of your homosexuality and do you feel free to introduce and involve your girlfriend in family events. My other question is would you say you were born gay or was this a learned behavior. Thanks

I somewhat :D agree with this. Though my moral values are also against homosexuality, I don't exclude them from my company. Even though I consider homosexuality to be wrong, who am I to judge them as wrongdoers if I myself have also done wrong?

Also, I think at this point we all (society) cannot agree on what "understanding homosexuality" actually means. Some people say that homosexuality is a choice and some say that it's inborn, and there's nothing one can do to change it, but there's not a lot of hard evidence supporting either viewpoint. Besides, how can anyone truly know if it's a choice or not?

Simple... was your heterosexuality a choice? When did you make it? What was the other choice available?

What's the evidence to support actually choosing one's sexuality?

DavyO.....perhaps you could direct me to some solid proof that people are born gay. I have yet to see that proven. Until it is definite fact that people are born gay, then it is a lifestyle choice.

Brad Johnson...I did not choose to be heterosexual. Yes, there are other groups I choose not to associate with. Drug users, heavy drinkers, and criminals would be them. The reasons are obvious.

DeepDeath.....I have heard your argument before. Morals are not ignorant, and it gets really old hearing people say that garbage. You have morals, everyone does. It is more than religion, which is what I think you are referring to that you would rather not discuss. You have decided in your life what is right and wrong. Those are your morals, how you came to acquire them is not the issue.

Here is a perfect example of someone calling me a bigot since I do not agree with their choices. IS IT EVER OK TO JUST DISAGREE WITH SOMEONE ANYMORE? I swear, people make you out to be an a$$hole, or a bigot, if you don't agree with them. I am not depriving people of their liberties. Am I hiding in a closet? No. Do I need to parade down the street telling everyone I am heterosexual? I guess I do now.

Because I choose to associate with heterosexuals does not mean I am condemning homosexuals. I am not judging homosexuals. "Birds of a feather, flock together". I associate with other people who I have the most in common with. Would I go to a website for drummers to post about my new Spector? No. Is it because I am a bigot? Nope, I simply choose to tell people who share my interest in it. I have never figured out where this comes from. Who we choose to associate with does NOT mean we condemn those we do not associate with. Does it make me a bigot since I associate mostly with other adults with kids since I also have kids? Am I comdemning childless couples by not associating with them?

Having morals make you ignorant? Thats possibly the funniest thing I've heard all day.

Either you yourself are ignorant, or just stupid.

Their is a difference between morals, and civility and humanism. Not associating yourself with others is discrimination as clearly as "White People Only" signs to a Swastika tattoed deeply black into your breast. Stop your Jim Crow morals.

That makes no sense... unless you think this statement is also valid: Until it is a definite fact that it's a lifestyle choice, they must be born that way.

Do you see the illogic at work?

Brad Johnson...I did not choose to be heterosexual. Yes, there are other groups I choose not to associate with. Drug users, heavy drinkers, and criminals would be them. The reasons are obvious.

I guess I was looking more for social groups rather than listing something obvious like criminals, drug users, etc. I for one don't care to hang around with the beaters of baby seals. I know that's a bold position but I'm taking it.

Mike, do you really think you aren't judging others? Of course you are. The very idea that they're doing something wrong is a judgement.

Not that you should be any different than you want to be.

TOO RIGHT!

I think I had a thread on the topic of breakfast a couple months ago, it IS the most important meal of the day, by far.

everyone I've ever met, when they don't eat a good breakfast, are grouchy, and when they do, they are not.

and if you disagree....you didn't have a good breakfast :p

So I'm right...

The reason people discriminate against gays... as demonstrated in this example... is that they believe it is a lifestyle choice, and that it's an easy choice not to make.

WRONG. According to all the scientific **** out there and testimony from real, live gay people, BEING GAY IS SOMETHING YOU'RE BORN WITH, AND YOU CAN'T DO A ****ING THING ABOUT IT, so the rest of the world needs to respect it.

What if you were born gay? Right or wrong, you have no say in the matter.

God hates gays? then why did God make them gay in the first place?

So, the answer to this one is ignorance.

Brad.....let me get this straight....if I disagree with someones lifestyle, I am judging them? That is complete BS. I guess if we continue using your logic, no one is allowed to have different opinions, or disagree with anyone. We all must agree all the time. Otherwise we would be a judgmental bigot?

I understand better what you mean about social groups I associate with. There are ZERO social groups I avoid because I feel they are "wrong". Since we are talking primarily about homosexual/heterosexual, I will continue on that subject. I walk into a room, and see one man identify himself as "gay", and another identify himself as "straight". I am initially drawn to the "straight" person since there is more POTENTIAL of us having more things in common. Would I rule out the "gay" person as a friend? No, I would not. But the chances of me having more in common with the "straight" guy are higher. Just like if I walk into a room with my wife and kids, and see one couple with kids, and a couple with no kids. We are drawn to the couple whom we would naturally have more in common with, the ones with kids. The same is true the other way around. Childless couples naturally tend to associate with other childless couples. Are these folks ignorant, closet bigots? Hardly. Having kids is a definite lifestyle choice. I chose to have kids, some don't. I certainly do NOT condemn anyone who remains childless.

DavyO....Could you direct me to the evidence please? I have been unable to find it. Are you simply repeating things you have heard, or do you know where to find this?

"Not associating yourself with others is discrimination"..................***? Explain please.

That is bs. I'm sorry but it is....
Unless you believe in the stereotypical gay person (which you obviously do), you just wouldn't assume that you would have more in common with a straight person than a gay person, just because of their sexual orientation.
There are plenty gay parents who vote conservative, buy guns and eat lots of red meat, just as there are white parents who vote green, buy fair trade coffee and live in eco friendly communes. I'm sure you'de have much more in common with the gay person then.
Sexual orientation has no effect on personality, hobbies, interests or any other aspects of life, apart from bedroom ones. It would do you good to remember this.

Brad - i love you :p

So, you are telling me that there is ZERO potential that the straight guy will have more in common with me? Lets see....the straight guy likes to have sex with women, the gay guy won't. If I am at the bar to find a date for the night, the gay guy isn't there for that reason. I have to agree with you somewhat about it having little effect on a persons life outside of bedroom preferences, but what you said at first is ridiculous.

This is exactly what I figured would happen. I speak up in this thread and express how I feel about it, and everyone jumps on the PC bandwagon and tries to beat me down for being a bigot. I am not allowed to disagree, that makes me judgemental. I am a bigot for ASSUMING a straight guy would share more in common with me than a gay guy. My opinions are now BS.
