Why do people even pay attention to the "specs?"

Specs give us a FRAME OF REFERENCE! This is a discussion board and this is the amp section where we talk about amps and cabs. Specs are VERY important.

Should we all just use words alone? What about the word Loud? Or when someone asks, "Will this cab handle my low B?" Even with respect to tone, using the words "Deep", "Warm", "Bright", "Scooped" can be difficult to understand completely without specs.

I require specs to design and build my own bass cabs. Without them it is a total crapshoot. I have yet to design and build a cab that didn't sound very close to what the "specs" told me it would. Why is that? Because specs are informative to those that understand them.

Ultimately yes your ears should be the judge, but with so many different amps and cabs available today, specs help narrow down the search. I can pretty much tell from specs alone (if I'm given enough accurate info) what a combination of any amp and cab are going to sound like (within reason) without even hearing it. How is that possible if specs don't mean anything? How on earth could I consider buying a bass cab without specs? How many watts can it handle before thermal or mechanical failure? What is the size of the cab combined with how many speakers? That alone will tell me to some degree how deep it goes or if the mids are accentuated. How many watts does an amp put out at how many ohms? Without that little spec, I'd be a fool to go and buy it just because someone gave a review and said it was a really cool amp.

Someone can tell me they have a cab that gets loud, goes deep, handles the low B, etc. and if they give me the size and number of speakers (and the T/S specs of the speakers if known), the internal volume of the cab and the amp they drive it with, I can pretty much tell if they are boasting about a crappy cab or not. At the very least it puts their "subjective" opinion about it into perspective for me.

Words are subjective, "real" specs are not. Without specs, our descriptive words are rendered meaningless. What does "loud" mean without specs? What is loud to you may not be what loud means to me. And loud within what frequency range? What does "deep lows" mean if you don't give me specs with it? Someone thinks their cab puts out deep lows very loudly. What does that mean? Are they hearing the true fundamental or which harmonic above that is giving them the impression they are hearing deep lows from that cab? But give me the specs and I know exactly what you mean by "loud" or "deep lows".

Your ears and your mind's perception of what your ears hear AND your opinion of what you are hearing is highly subjective. But give me specs to go along with your "words" and perhaps I'll have a better understanding of what YOU are hearing...or at least what you think you are hearing. So when one offers an opinion or asks a question on a piece of gear, if all one uses are words as descriptors, those words mean nothing to me without specs.
 
Because otherwise there would be posts on here everyday about "why is it my macho Acoustic B200H powering a sweet innocent little Basson 8x10 cab is so effective for roasting marshmallows?".

Because it's a really kewl rig, man! I've been wanting a rig that can roast marshmallows. Thanks for that informative review! I gotta go buy me one of those now! :D
 
Gee, good thing I listened to and compared my 500 watt-15 setup to my 175 watt-8 inch setup 'cause otherwise how would I have known which would fill the bar better? Point taken about specs warranting a grain of salt, but ignoring them completely would be like burning all the books because some are lies. What Jimmy said sums up the obviously reasonable approach.
 
Not pay attention to specs? I don't think so. Different manufacturers have different methods for measuring wattage, but no way in hell a 200 watt bass amp will keep up with my 1000 watt rig ( assuming we are using comparable cabs). A 200 watt bass amp will not keep up with 2 guitarists with full stacks without PA support. Does wattage matter? Bet that ass.
 
Im pretty sure the reason why a guitarist wailing on a Strat with a 30 watt Vox amp is louder than my 350 watt Bass amp has more to do with frequency than amps. Bass amps have to be more powerful to compensate.

But Im probly wrong about that.
 
Speaker sensitivity (including the sensitivity boosts you get by adding more speakers) is as or more important than amplifier wattage once you get past a certain point.

From 1 to 256 watts, you add approximately 21db of volume. From 256 to 512 watts you add 3db of volume.

Once you get around 200+ watts, you should start thinking "Is my speaker setup sensitive enough? Do I have enough cabs?" before you start worrying about wattage, IMHO.

Yes, some specs are inaccurate (lies, damn lies, etc), and specs alone won't tell you how good a piece of gear sounds or performs. On top of this, some folks like gear that is designed "wrong" (e.g. high level of harmonic distortion, or a speaker enclosure being "too small" for the number of drivers it contains) and there's nothing wrong with that.

But while it's silly to rely on specs entirely, it's equally silly to discard them entirely.
 
Why care about specs? Because we're bassists and we overanalyze everything. Companies realize that there is a market for this and so they publish BS numbers to make us feel like we know what we're doing while blindly dropping thousands of dollars on stuff we'll never need (afterall, we're just bassists).

You want to know where gear math counts? PA systems. For guitar/bass amps and all that other useless garble, it's worthless. There is one company that produces 3 amplifiers, and every other company re-packages them with their brand name and re-builds the speaker box so that we musicians can argue about it later. Every guitar/bass amp in existence is only 25W into a 10" 8-ohm driver because the soundguy and his PA should be doing all the work.

As a theoretical physics & theoretical math major, I place no faith in numbers and statistics. Do you have the deciBALLS to agree with me?
 
IMO, on one hand, specs are almost useless when trying to determine how an amp or cabinet actually sounds (especially 'tone-wise), and many manufacturers seem to 'fudge' the numbers to their advantage (its called 'advertising'), but, i do still refer to them as a basic guidline.

as far as power specs, when it comes to amps, as inaccurate or varied as they may be (i.e RMS, EIA, continuous, peak, 'program or music' power), i must say that most company's specs still offer at least decent guideline as to how much power or output you can expect a head to have.

Specs are a good tool, but can't tell you what sounds "good", particularly in reference to MI rigs.
The "proof of the pudding is in the eating", as the old adage goes.
Reading a book, running some software, and spouting your "expert" opinion on a forum doesn't accomplish anything tangible.
Wasting a lot of plywood and/or solder, investing hours in prototype testing, and actually producing a viable, commercially sucessful product does.

Use your ears, if you like it, it's the product you should use. ;)
 
One thing to note is that the high end PA cabinets whose vendors publish frequency response and polar response plots are a lot easier to guess at with regards to tone.

If bass cab vendors would hold themselves to that standard, buying without hearing would be a lot easier and more accurate.

I think a couple of issues are at play. First, buyers of high-end PA cabinets are far more knowledgeable about specs than the average bassist. Second, a good number of bassists (myself included) don't give highest priority to hi-fi performance: we'd rather have one of the vintage Ampeg tones, a modern SWR or Eden tone, etc. Manufacturers provide the tones, but I can't believe that they would win sales through honest specs and marketing, e.g. "We give you the 500Hz mid scoop you know and love!" It's far more lucrative for each one to claim "our cabs give you thunderous lows, punchy mids, and glassy highs!", and back it up with irrelevant or inaccurate specs.

We'll get better specs if we educate ourselves and penalize the companies who fudge, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
