Why do we bother arguing online

Oh crap. I just noticed you're in baton rouge. I'm originally from lafayette

Back in the '80s, I was a criminal investigator working cases while based in New Orleans. But my territory was South Louisiana from just East of Baton Rouge over to the Texas line. I'd normally drive to Lake Charles on Monday and work cases there on Monday & Tuesday. Then drive to Lafayette Tuesday afternoon and work cases there. Wednesday afternoon I'd drive to Baton Rouge and spend two nights there while working cases. Good times for sure. I loved working that territory. Great food, music, people, and fun times...

Even if your opinion isn't going to change, I think it's invaluable to know as many perspectives on a given matter as possible. The world isn't a homogeneous mixture, hearing the views, opinions and reasoning of others, even if they don't agree with your own, is a great way to better educate yourself and helps stamp out ignorance.

I have seen alot of people change their opinions, and at least how they think about things from online discussions. I myself have changed alot over the last couple years from discussing things online.

That said I do believe there is a certain sort of person who will never change no matter what, no matter how wrong you prove them. Its sad.

in my >12 years moderating and then admining this forum, i've seen so many different arguments and fights on line that i can hardly remember 1/10th of them.

to me it seems like everyone, at some point or another, feels, at some level, powerless in their lives - either underutilised or underappreciated, if not outright oppressed by their situation and the others sharing their space.

some folks deal with this by coming on line and arguing about something that they may have strong feelings about but in the grand scheme of things is relatively arbitrary and irrelevant to their lives or anyone else's, for that matter. seems like its an attempt to satisfy the universal human need to make some kind of impact on the world, to exert some level of control in a life that has somehow become otherwise often beyond their ability to even comprehend, let alone control. ultimately, though, it's like coming home and kicking the dog. wasn't his fault that someone's day sucked.

there have been, through the years, many individuals who have come to talkbass, argued and trolled themselves out the door with my, or another mod/admin's, boot print on their bottom providing the propulsion, only to have these same folks contact us 6 months or a year later apologizing, asking to be allowed back, and explaining their lapse by saying they were going through a bad patch in their lives - bad job, bad marriage, etc.

for every member who doesn't melt down sufficiently to get ejected off the island, there's countless other folks who post here with barely suppressed rage/contempt that, i think, must spring from a similar well. its a shame, really - instead of arguing and spreading the ugliness they do not like in their lives, if they put a little effort into it, a lot of these folks might see that talkbass would better serve as a haven from things if they were to attempt to build bridges instead of burn them. to use the dog analogy again, most dogs make better comforters than punching bags.

I can hardly remember 1/10th of your face!

:hiding: :D

Sometimes I wonder if it just comes down to ego. I mean, when you're posting on a forum, your whole being is sorta compressed into short posts on any given topic. When someone challenges that post, then it's like they're challenging YOU, rather than simply what you wrote. It's a psychological thing - like your whole ability to "look good or look bad" in this odd faceless community is your ability to argue a point and or 'win" an argument. When someone challenges that, we tend to fight back tooth and nail with a "how dare they try to make me look bad!!!!" slant. I dunno, just a theory. It doesn't factor into everyone's participation and mindset, but I suspect that it does for many.

Why do we bother arguing via forum? I have never seen an opinion change, have you? Why do people spend so much time arguing a point when the other side isn't even listening? I've been guilty of it, and refuse to waste my time any longer. Its fun for a while but nothing good ever comes from it.

Is your experience the same? Anybody just stopped trying?

I've mostly stopped trying. Forums are mostly for people that have a single opinion they want to express per thread without any willingness to learn about the true subject at hand being discussed. And yes, 1UPing someone online does make the powerless feel powered.

There are three things that I notice .

1 someone says your wrong when it's a fact your right
2 you realize you were wrong and try to maintain that you were really right in some bazaar indirect way (I have been guilty of both of these)
3 you try to start a topic that couldn't possibly turn sour and it does! Sometimes I get so sick of it, it's a subject where you'd think there'd be no arguing just discussing something based around physics and bam attacks from all sides.

And here I'm going to come off sounding arrogant, but I know much more about a broader range of things than your average non Internet friendly person. There are times I hear people say things and I wonder if their serious. Have a discussion with them and realize they never access the Internet unless it's for pron and have no idea what a forum is. I guess I have forums to thank for that, as I'm subjected to many more view points, thoughts, news, ideas than average person.

Just on these parts (and to be honest, I think we have all been guilty of those).

Maybe it's in part me maturing (hah! Penis!), but more and more often, things don't seem to be right and wrong, black and white, but a shade of grey, which can lead to things getting heated.

IMHO what you describe is the typical result form arguing in any context. It's usually a waste of time and energy. I, like you, have pretty much stopped bothering. In the process I have discovered that silence has power, and sometimes your lack of reply will cause the other party to use their energy in a positive way, reflecting on why you didn't answer and doing a more objective analysis of what they said.

I think it has a lot to do with how arguing puts both parties on the defensive, and skews logic. On the other hand, when both parties are seeking the truth and are open to each others ideas, real learning may result. Or not :D
