I mean, the recorded history of modern music tells you all you need to know. The P, the Jazz Bass, and the Stingray compose the basslines to every song I've ever loved (besides some synth stuff!)

Heavier gauge strings certainly do have more low end

My understanding is that they have a stronger fundamental with fewer harmonics.
