Nobody needs anything beyond a Fender P bass. For many of us, playing is also or mostly a hobby. I would collect cars like Jay Leno if I could afford it but I can't.

I love to look at beautiful woods and make a variety of tones with different pickups. I guess you could say that basses are toys for me.

For a professional musician, they are mostly tools but might also be toys. In my case they are mostly toys.

Did you just ask everyone a question and then answer it yourself (while using quotation marks for your own thought)? Interesting strategy, lets see if it pays off!

I’ve never heard of someone buying a boutique bass for that reason, and I’ve certainly never read about it on TB before your post.

sometimes it takes a long time to figure out that other folks opinions about Your gear are moot ..!!

and sometimes 'showing off' is just fun ,... and might make you think you play better than you might ..! ha

i've had basses from a couple hundred up to around $7k-ish since around 1973-ish ... still played like Me ..!

now i prefer to build my own parts basses from my favorite pieces parts that i've learned to like over the decades ..!!

usually costing between $400 - just below $1,000 in parts ... still play like Me ... if someone doesn't want me to be Me , they can move along ..!

Better/nicer basses is a subjective thing. Started out with a very used MIM P Bass. Got it cheap it had issues that I was unable to fix at the time. (now that I could fix the issues I wish I still had that bass). Bought a new MIM 50's P. That was a better/nicer bass at the time. As my skills and ears changed I bought a Am Std P-Bass, another better/nicer bass. Upgraded the pickups, cap and pots in the MIM 50's, it was like a new bass. Still love both basses, some would say they are not cheapos but neither are they boutique basses.
I plan to build my next bass.

My posts were sarcastic and snarky. Should they have been more hostile? pERhAps.

But now the moment has passed, and it's too late for me to express my "OUTRAGE" over someone questioning my gear choices.

Or maybe I'll just start a "Snarky vs Hostile" thread, (complete with poll) and solicit everyone's opinion. My guess is that I'll get a lot of snarky and hostile replies.

I don’t anything.

I get the sound I want from whatever I’m playing. I don’t need one particular make or model bass to get “my” sound.

I also don’t have just one “my” sound to work with. To borrow from Walt Whitman; “I contain multitudes.” I have a variety of sounds and vibes I choose from among or mix& match as the music calls for. I was never a believer in: “one size (or sound) fits all.”
