Why do YOU play more than four?

To the OP:: what was your point in asking that question?? I could just as easily ask u why u only play a four!!!!! I play a 4 , 5 and 6 becauses they all have their niche. And to explain that is pointless unless you already understand.....I've been seein to many slams on Tb against 5'ers. and 6'ers not really being bass players.....maybe a head to head (4 string player vs a 6 string) is in order lol!!!!! To make it even, let the 6 string guy play a 4 string so he has a handicap!!!!!

I love playing my 4 banger, but I also love playin the other ones too...it's all bass!!

He was movin' on up.:D

I like five strings because I can move all of my patterns up 5 frets and over one string if I want a heavier sound or shorter reach. I can also play in keys below E and still add some real depth to the sound of the band without tuning down. It makes it easy to play songs by Stevie Ray Vaughn or Hendrix that are tuned down a half step without tuning down.

Jeff Berlin: "Five string basses won't make you a better player."

Neither will a four, six, seven, or eleven. Regardless, you still have to practice your craft.

I actually started with a four but as my playing developed, A B-string needed to be added. I've been an exclusive 5-stringer for over 12 years now and I'm not looking back.

i like 5's because i play in a metal band saves down tuning also when playing things like funk and progressive stuff its means i can really hammer home the low end. I also like wider necks and narrower string spacing. did enjoy playing a 6 (was very comfortable) and i will most likely invest in one sometime. but the 5 is my W.M.D. people still say Why 5 and as it has already been mentioned why not? :D

Apart from the extra low and high notes, I just like the feel of 6+ strings. The neck, the body (mainly the bigger bodies), the ease of play (i started out on classical guitar and moved to bass, narrow necks just don't do it for me), they're all better. A 4 string feels like playing an eel, and when playing my lines it looks like it too. I can't swing back and forth along the neck on every song.
