Why does everyone hate an Warwick basses.

I've owned 3 warwicks in the past and I will say the newer fortress i had with the ovangkol neck seemed chunkier than the old wenge necks. That said, I just think the wenge sound wasn't for me. My only other thing is I'm not a huge fan of oil finishes. They're nice in the beginning, but get really dirty. In any case no hate here. Just found my tastes moved in a different direction. The corvetter fna i had was cool.

As others have said, it comes down to personal taste. I own Alembics and believe me they get as much hate as Warwicks. I don't care I love mine.

you had a fortress with an ovangkol neck? that's a rarity!

I couldn't stand even holding the necks when at the store - too weird. I also thought that they are greatly overpriced. Then, a couple of years ago my friend had borrowed a $$ for demo in his booth at NAMM. I stopped and played it for a while, and the neck shape seemed fine, no matter how big it is, and I enjoyed the playability and the unique sound. It completely changed my previously negative opinion

I ended up buying the demo unit at the end of the show from Warwick for a GREAT price, and use this bass for all hard rock gigs. It is REALLY easy to play, the great variety or sounds are distinctive and the build quality is very very good.

I had a thumb 5 bolt on for a few years, and I never really liked it. Loved the way it looked, but it only had one good sound - pickup pan dead middle, no EQ adjustment. Panning to either pickup individually sounded like butt, boosting the highs sounded terrible and grating (cutting the highs is okay for getting a bit more old school, though), and the low knob affected too wide a range. The 2-band active EQ just didn't work for me.

Not to mention it was crazy heavy, horribly balanced, and the neck is basically a baseball bat.

Oh, it did sound freakin' sweet with a pick. Super grindy and punchy. Otherwise, it never really did it for me.

one real weakness i heard regarding warwicks is that they use an accelerated drying process for the wood, essentially putting the wood in an oven to dry it faster and make more basses in less time. i got this from a bass professional, a player that i really admire, who worked at warwick for some time. the end result of the accelerated drying is that after a few years, the necks may tend to crack, especially where different types of wood are combined.

someone below said it nicely however, playing bass is all about what feels and sounds right for you. so if warwick is your thing, go for it and to heck with anyone who doesn't like it!

I think they're great basses, just not my cup of tea. Also I believe that the people who ruthlessly bash them are those who would love to have one but can't afford it and thus try to make themselves feel better or project the outward message that they don't want one anyway. Don't worry about it, man. Play what you dig ;)

I love my Flashback. I play P's mainly so the neck is just fine and very easy to play. The tone is awesome and overall fit and finish is perfect. If anyone really hates their Warwick, send it to me and I'll give it a loving home :smug:

in fact, the necks on the flashbacks are even slimmer than the other wenge-era warwicks - which makes your flashback 5 a very cool neck for a 5er

i play a flashback 4 myself and the neck is downright SKINNY - it's narrower than a new waver's tie! so when people who play P-basses talk about warwicks having baseball bat necks, i'm like

I know there exists a fair movement of people who don't care for the 'wicks but at nearly every gig where I take mine(Streamer Stage II 5) she gets all sorts of compliments on sound and appearance, and thats from musicians and random drunks alike. I've had a few till I got this and its my dream bass. Not saying its perfect but it works in so many situations.

Yeah its heavy as a horse but its a bass guitar not a tin whistle, I just deal with it.

as many have said, a Warwick is a distinct thing - To like Warwick, you have to like their necks. I do not, which saddens me because many of the instruments they make are beautiful... But every one I've tried just didn't work for me.

You have to give them credit - they started with those big, rough necks and have stuck with them - and managed to say in business, so they must be doing something right for some folks. Just not me.

Their older necks were not big and rough. Mine is a 90s model and the neck is very slim compared to the newer ones.

WARWICK WENT BACK TO THEIR OLDER NECK PROFILE FOR THE '09 LINEUP, WHICH IS MUCH MORE SLIMMER (THINK THE WENGE NECKS), SO STOP COMPLAINING PLEASE
