Why does everyone hate an Warwick basses.

I have a Warwick Corvette Standard (passive, 4-string fretless) with a bubinga body and ebony fingerboard. I love the tone and the feel! I really like the thicker neck on a fretless. (Actually, the Corvette STD has a comparatively small neck compared to some of the other models.)

Why do people hate anything?
I dunno,I'm not a philosopher.
Why do people repeadly post the fact that they hate a certain brand?Coz they need to grow up,but probably wont & will stumble through life in their own pessimistic way, then die alone & unhappy.
Hang on a second, maybe I am a philospher after all.

Yup, I must need to grow up.

Tried two at local store, didn't like the neck. Then I tried a Rickenbacker - nothing has changed in my 30 years of bass playing - I love the look and sound of a Rick but don't like the neck. Ditto on Gibsons. Instruments are like jewelry or clothing, they have to fit your taste, your body, the occasion and your pocketbook. If the Warwick works for you that is fine. Lots of people snap on Washburns - I got the 5 string Taurus, replaced the tuners, bridge and electronics..total cost about $900(ax $440, parts about the same)+ my labor. But to my ears and hands it sounds better than axes costing 2-3X that.

1. Often they have uncomfortably thick neck.
2. Often heavily and not well balanced.
3. MEC pickups and EQ do not sound good imo.
4. Funky African woods do not sound as good (as traditional) as ash, alder, maple, imo.
5. Kinda superficial, but in my neck of the wood they attract slappies and death metal kids, so I have started to associate the warwick tone with that sort of annoying music.

Outside of a couple old Streamers with SD pups, I though the Rockbass line sounded the best and were the most tonally flexible.

Hey gang,

James LoMenzo here, I still love my Warwicks. Couldn't imagine my career without them.

The 2 cents I have for this forum is this.

In some (only some) of my gig situations, people just weren't buying the tone or the look of my Warwicks. Most of the Warwicks I own are neck-throughs, 5-7 laminated necks, exotic woods pre's etc. In my circles, most people just want to hear the old familiar bolt-on-Ash-Alder-Maple-Rosewood-passive sound that they grew up on (a sound that I endear as well). Being an over-achiever, I suppose my choice of basses was always a little "over-qualified" for it's intended place and purpose. Having said that, I kinda understand the aesthetic devisions that bassists build up over various make's and models, but isn't it wonderful that there are so many choices out there for bassists to express themselves? Wasn't like that when I was a kid.

Playing a Warwick is like drinking scotch, its a taste that has to be acquired ;)

BINGO!!

I have a 'wick $$ 5 string with ovangkol neck. THere are days I want to get out the woodburner and burn "loiusville slugger" into the neck, but I love the sound. And all the angles of the $$ electronics...

I have medium hands and have been getting some strain and pains, but I've learned to pay attention to where my thumb is roaming.....that's been the big deal for me. It wants to wang out toward the top of the neck and I have to keep reminding my self to tuck it under my fingers if I start getting sore forearm muscles.

Candidly I think the issue is as much 5 string wide neck as it is thick neck. I just checked my starter Dean EAB Fretless and it's close to the same depth on the neck. That surprised me!

I also love Oban, Talisker and Lagavulin!:D

After a couple of those, I LOVE WARWICKS!:hyper:

I owned a Warwick Thumb Bolt-on 4. It had a nice rich dark sound and it played great. But when wearing it on a strap it always felt uncomfortable, the neck stuck out too far. (I traded it for a Modulus Genesis Jazz which I still have.)

If I found another model that balanced better I would consider another Warwick....I just like the way a Fender style Jazz plays on a strap and where the neck is positioned for my hand.

I don't hate them they just don't work as good as a Fender style instrument does for me. :)

Funny. The neck on my Stage One 5er isn't chunky at all. In fact, it has a fairly thin neck. Otherwise there's no way I'd own it.

The Stage II that I just sold didn't have a very chunky neck, either. Slightly moreso than my SSI, but it wasn't a baseball bat by any means.

And FWIW, I can't stand fat necks. The Spectors that I've owned had MUCH fatter, rounded, baseball bat type necks than any Warwick I've played/owned.

And it weighs in at around 9lbs. Hardly what I'd consider to be a "boat anchor".

yeah, my fortress flashback has a downright SKINNY neck and I dont think it even weighs 8 pounds

anyone who thinks that warwick=chunky neck really hasn't tried too many warwicks
