Why does everyone love AMPEG so much?

im 110% a hartke speaker guy but i love the sound and flexability of an ampeg head. ive never owned one but ive played through a few and fell in love. i was able to get the sound i like without pedals or eq. the thing i hate is the price, they are way too expensive.

1. Coors Light is actually enjoyable on a hot day, when you're working in the backyard and sweating like a mule hog. You can drink a case of 'em and still be coherent, and not feel too terrible the morning after. Other than that, it's pretty much pi**.

2. In my limited experience with Ampeg, it seems to be where the amps sit. The scooped tone, and imparted tube drive of an SVT sits really nice in a rock and roll mix, period. I tried to fight it, but these days I use a Fender amp with a VT Bass in front of it. The tone is mostly Ampeg emulated, and I love it.

Speaking only for myself, I don't "love Ampeg so much." However, the B-15 (and family) is the best amp ever built. I wouldn't have believed it myself back in the dark days before I had the chance to spend some quality time with one.

As for the SVT? Take your pick. Most everybody's hero played one. Easy to get a workable tone out of one + available throughout the developed world = common pro backline amp. Simple, serviceable, and reliable. Tubes are cool. Big amps scream Rock N Roll. Traditional. I'm sure there are more reasons.

If we're using the alcohol analogy, an SVT is hardly a lite beer. More like Jack Daniels. Markbass? Zima.

Why do people like Ampeg? Do yourself a favor... go to your local GC or wherever.... go early on a Tuesday or whenever it's likely to be slow and politely ask if you may turn a bass rig up to test its stage volume.

Grab yourself a Fender Jazz Bass, a Rickenbacker or anything with EMG humbuckers.... plug that into an Ampeg SVT-CL ( Gain past noon, Ultra-Low on, mids boosted at #4 or #5, and plug that into an SVT-810e. Now set your master volume at about 2 oclock.

Play.

There is the answer to your question.....

Already been done, but on a much larger scale and without the use of GC. If you read back further I use to own a Ampeg.

I had a Yorkville and a 15" cab. Then I bought an Ampeg B2RE and used that with the 15". After I sold the Yorkville and cab, I kept the Ampeg and had no amp for a long time.

The second cab I bought was my big boy cab. I knew I wanted to go big. I didn't know half as much about amps as I do know. I knew there were a "few other" 8x10 cabinets, but I wanted to match the head. Bought a brand new SVT-810E.

I went through a few heads, but now I'm with my SVT-CL... and you know what? I haven't regretted it yet. Sounds f***ing fantastic for everything I need it for. Never been happier with my setup. Sure, I would like a second rig with two or more cabinets just for show (and tell), but I wouldn't need it.

What amp would be 151? You know, that amp that no matter how many times you try it, you just want to puke afterwards?

I was going to say Behringer, but 151 is strong... Behringer isn't.
