Why does everyone love AMPEG so much?

Just a general question. I've played through several ampeg heads but never really liked any at all. I started out playing through peavey then moved to ampeg then finally made my way to Kustom. I know kustom isn't really the cream of the crop when it comes to bass amplification but for some reason I just love the tone. (I play on a Groove 1200HD through a G-810H). Just looking for some answers as why Ampeg seems to be the "bass players choice".

Not everyone.

2. In my limited experience with Ampeg, it seems to be where the amps sit. The scooped tone, and imparted tube drive of an SVT sits really nice in a rock and roll mix, period. I tried to fight it, but these days I use a Fender amp with a VT Bass in front of it. The tone is mostly Ampeg emulated, and I love it.

Yeah they sit well in a mix but... the Ampeg SVT defines "not-scooped" sounding.

Not a big Ampeg fan. Too big, too heavy, and I can get better tone and/or crush them with my rigs.

Mesa Boogie Bass 400+ and Bergantino NV412 - IMO the king of bass amp tone and really loud.

Eden WT800B and Bergantino NV412 - very good tone and again really loud.

For that matter, the 400+ or WT800 and my Peavey 215D (with Eminence Deltalite IIs) has great old school tone and can keep up with the average SVT 810 rig.

Hughes and Kettner Fortress pre and QSC PLX2 1804 power amp and Bergantino NV412 - very good tone and massive, crushing power and that is using only one of the power amp channels.
I can still add a second cab if needed.

What model Ampeg head? Got any pics of the Ampeg rig?

For the reason you just stated. Ampeg has it's own tone. I didn't like Ampeg so much till I tried an SVT 2. It's a differently voiced amp than the newer ones IMO. The 810e has it's own magic as well. The punch and frequency response from the sealed cab with stamped baskets is pretty unique. The roll off in the lows and highs of those cabs just works well, plain and simple. Not everyone's cup of tea, but if you like the sound there really isn't any substitute.

Well done sir!

Already been done, but on a much larger scale and without the use of GC. If you read back further I use to own a Ampeg.

Ahhh yes I see that now. Well... some people love it...some dont.

+1

The famed Ampeg grind sits somewhere in the mids/lo-mids in my experience. I think he meant rolled-off lows rather than scooped.

Right.
I guess my Ampeg experience is much more limited than I thought. :hiding:

I do mean rolled off rather than scooped, and would agree with the finding the "grind" to sit in the lo-mid area.

I denounce and reject myself, but thoroughly approve of the redheads.
