Why does everyone love AMPEG so much?

Yeah I don't understand that either, I think Fender basses are horrible instruments.

Well, I make about half my yearly income with a Fender so they can't be that bad ;)

I am not a big fan of the Ampeg sound personally. I think that the general public recognise the name and that is why you see so many as backlines in music videos and concerts. Of course the SVT stack has a distinct tone that many many love. Its hard to get that sound out of any other rig. I like a very clean and accurate tone myself, but to each his own!

Many people struggle to be impartial when it comes to buying amps/instruments. If they have the preconceived notion that they want an Ampeg (because their favourite bassists use them) then they won't fairly judge other amps (or they may not even try any).

Ampegs are good however, so there are many people who have tried many amps but still choose Ampeg because it suits their playing.

Oh, lemme jump inbefore this thread gets locked, lol.

I'm running Markbass, but get to play an old V4 through an old SVT 810 every week at the blues shack. It sounds good, although I haven't gotten to try it with a too-loud, overly deep eq'd drummer. I'd like to see how the tone would hold up for kicking through that kind of mix.

Ran my Little Mark III head through the 810 one night. It, too, sounded great. Better? heck, I dunno, maybe to me, but I'm used to the LMIII and its ways. I have noticed that the average tone I get through the V4 and 810 has a mid cut sound to it. How does that work in a mix? Everyone here says not to cut your mids so much. Sounds great with the guys I jam with, but when I play with my markbass I have to give it some mids.

The markbass can get a similar tone if I roll back the mids. I don't have the cabs to pump that sound t high volume, but I'm just saying that I can get a similar sound (mind you, I said "similar).

I understand the OP asking why everyone loves Ampeg so much because you hear so much talk about it. It's like asking why everyone loves Rush and Geddy so much on here (I don't, but that's ok if anyone else does). I will say that the Ampeg stuff has passed the test of time, and many folks love it. I haven't had enough experience with it myself, but I'm sure there's some of it that I would love myself. But, I'm doing fine with my Markbass rig right now.

Oh, and I love Fender basses, too.
