Why does mordern pop music suck?

It's our fault.

We pampered our children and spoiled them rotten. Turning them into walking vegetables who are completely incapable of creative thought.

Then please explain (33 year old) Esperanza Spalding and (32 year old) Trombone Shorty...both can play rings around anybody from my generation (I'm 45 btw)

... aaaaaaaand I suppose we're not going to receive any suggestions, huh?

Only lip service telling us we're wrong... gotcha.
“Lip service” isn’t my area of expertise, but what a great name for a cover band.

Katy Perry - Chained To the rhythm
Maren Morris - 80’s Mercedes
Bruno Mars - Treasure
Phantogram - Funeral Pyre
Dirty Loops - um... theirs entire discography

I just saw this video and my suspicions were reinforced by it. There is a bit to digest here, but I think the video sums things up quite nicely. One thing I really miss is dynamic range in recordings. Why does every sound have to be in your face?
Anyway, Get Off My Lawn!

Short answer ,music from art change to business.

In past the music had to be good to sell .(Jackson ,rock bands and ......)

But the standards change .
Today they wanna make people pays for the stupid stuff .

Justin was on of first revelation movement of the business .a boy that he is young ,white (nothing racist but material like this can target much bigger area between teens )target teens and children .
So they started buy things by their iPods and ...
The fans came for the singer not the art .
The second generation even go further ,makes bug live with a lot of crowd of this teen girls .

Second band that enter form uk ,
One direction
A group of young attractive boy that can match every teen girl (few boys )wants them . Another win like Justin the sad part is that this artists have expire dates.

Then they saw they need girls band for attract boys .
A lot of girl bands form and a lot of woman singer .(Minaj ) come in market .
They found they need a rock band in business add from Australia five second of summer .

This business works well because it's fake .
Here even a lot of talented as artist can't come up in chart because the mafia of music don't let them .
Next generation that you will see will be singers with electronic music (cost much lower in a lot of places and of course the money that records get get much higher ).

Some other things started in the business too .
The music business made producer and instrument maker pay them a lot of money for marketing their brand .
Grammy award has a lot of fenders and gibson .(i don't say they are bad brands but they get marketing plus Aguilar amps are one of the most seen amp in this industry )

So the original business not only get money from other companies but have a lot of control over out put .

Sadly this industry start makes music that singer have most of it .
And I see some artist go 20_80 with their record labels .
This mafia destory music .
They manage some awards for double sure the listener only listen to their stuff .

Grammy award

American music award

Iheartradio award

Every year they get worse ,one time look at nomination and search the name on internet you find few record label have at least 80% of this .
When some one win they make people believes that artist is great .

Ama (make five second of summer from small local band to a huge branding one)
Maybe this artist try a lot but because the material is not clean we usllay find marketing style music .

You can even see in Eurovision ,by time the winners starts get worse and worse and start even mix some thinking style with it.

They starts mix thinking style in music too .
New musics mostly have party and just having fun .
When older as stuff (even from usa ) you can find songs that talks about human right ,freedom , politics ,anti racist ,friendship .but this things chage by new thinking styles that a lot of them do damage to society .

I heard an interview with a prominent pop producer where he was listening to song demos. He heard one and said "That's a nice song but too melodic for radio." TOO MUCH MELODY IS A PROBLEM?!!?!
I believe that Pink Floyd would have a snowballs chance in hell if they started out today, probably be an independent label in an underground scene and most likely never gain a quarter of the fame they deserve.

This. We don't remember the dreck that populated the airwaves before, during, and after the Beatles and the rise of rock n roll in the 60s and 70s.

You know what was Record of the Year in 1964 (the year A Hard Days Night was released)? The Girl From Ipanema.
...which is a work of genius with a tenor sax solo by Stan Getz, a master jazz player, one of the best relaxed pure tones ever. I also remember awful hours of easy listening radio in those days and it provided jobs and income to thousands of actual excellent musicians. but it was bad. today, fascinating.
Someone quoted this: The story behind this song: Astrud Gilberto was just the wife of singing star João Gilberto when she entered a NYC studio in March 1963. João and Jobim were making a record with tenor saxman Stan Getz. The idea of cutting a verse on “Ipanema” in English came up, and Astrud was the only one of the Brazilians who spoke more than phrasebook English. Astrud’s child-like vocal, devoid of vibrato and singerly mannerisms, was the perfect foil for her husband’s soft bumblebee voice. Jobim tinkled piano. Getz blew a creamy smooth tenor. Four minutes of magic went to tape.

There was bubble gum pop in the 60s, you need to look harder. There was skiffle and all sorts common music. I don't agree with the video. Who really care what happens in the worst pop? What about Avenged Sevenfold, John Legend, or Sam Smith?
The video reminds of academic, Jazz, or Classical attitudes about music. Simple music has been around forever and if you don't like it, don't listen to it
You're IQ is set around 25, and so is you taste in music. I find I'm pickier now than as a teen when we POTUS, Copecetic, and Grunge. Punks been around since the 1970s.
People can listen to whatever they want.

It seems to gete over the head of many old people here that music is now just a comodity that you throw in the trash can once you're done with it unlike in your time when there wasn't a lot of stuff and so appreciate more this stuff.

There is so much stuff to do now that music is more of a background stuff you listen in the bus to work or school so you don't have to hear the bus or people talk. So yeah ... music became louder.

Getting angry at it and being like :It was so much better in my time, won't solve anything.

I can buy whatever music that fits my fancy and so I don't have to hear Pop music at all while in your old time you couldn't do that stuff.

Anyway, I'll play whatever I want, when I want and listen to whatever I want when I want the rest of the world could burn I couldn't care less.

There has ALWAYS been cr@p pop music that sold well, and it has ALWAYS been a business. That's why Elvis went from making great music to lousy movies with cheesy songs, and then to Vegas.

Read Standing in the Shadows of Motown - the band was just doing it so they could support their families and play jazz at night!

Etc.

Sorry to burst your bubble but music never been about Art ... it was a business and still is a business. Those old classical composers did write music for money and did write music that was hip with the monarchy.

Many rich monarch did hire a composer and paid him to write music that would blow other composer and so they could brag at other monarch that his composer was the best.

I'd like to address to common responses:

  1. There is really good music if you look for it. I agree, but if you have to look for it, it isn't pop. By Definition, pop is the music that is right there in your face everywhere you go. It is on the radio, used in commercial, piped into stores, etc. Pop is the tip of a giant iceberg of music, but that 10% of the iceberg is the part anyone really pays attention to.
  2. Young people (or kids) these days....
    Stop right there!
Every single generation since man started keeping records has complained about the younger generations. It is the oldest tropes in the world. It will take you 10 seconds to find videos on YouTube of old cranks calling the Beatles noise. Jazz has been maligned so long its hard to know when it even started. New things are going to put off older people. That's it. If this is your only argument, get over it and move on because you sound like your parents.
